Hello all. Welcome to the 2011 sailing season.

My nephew and I are departing from St. John's NFLD in mid-May on an Alberg 30 (beautiful boat, absolutely beautiful!) for a 1000nM cruise around the North Atlantic. Our route will take us to the Azores, Canaries, Cape Verde, Lesser Antilles ...

I am starting this thread as a place where I may absorb the experience and suggestions of others. Thank you for taking the time to follow this thread.

My first request is hopefully a simple one: Does anyone know where I may acquire a rudder gudgeon for the Alberg 30? It is a cast bronze unit that comes apart in 2 pieces. See attached photo.

Can't help on the rudder bits, but do plan to stop at Madeira. You will sail right by it and its a magnificent stop - great walks and lovely wine/port.

Naah... the best Fish n Chips are served right on Poole Quay.... or so fish eaters (YUK) tell me....

Negative, Sir!

Best F&C are served in Auckland, NZ, and they are made by the Chinese (not in China though!).

To the OP:

I think you will love the loop. Azores are great. Canary Islands are great. West Indies are great.

I am in Canary Islands right now and should you need any local know-how when you arrive you are welcome to ask my support.

Do they use beer batter.... and serve in paper... otherwise its just another cheap copy...

There you go. I was talking to a cop on a horse today in front of my boat club (talk about contrasting transports) and he was from Twillingate, Nfld. I told him I knew only two things about Newfoundland from other cruisers and he said "let me finish...friendliest people and most fun, right?"

Which is precisely what I've been told. Add "great fish and chips" to that list, I guess.
