Nine Weeks Off Next Summer

I have accumulated 360 hrs of leave at work. The idea is for me, my wife and 11 yr old daughter to leave at the end of school and take the summer off to go sailing. We have a Morgan 382. Starting in New Bern, NC - I am looking for cruising suggestions. New York City is an initial thought. But I would love to hear creative suggestions. This trip is intended, aside from the obvious fun, as a test to see if taking a year or more off is something that we would want to do.

Thank you

Don't make a plan.

Head North and by the time you turn around you will have decided how you want to get home and how much time it will take.

One day at a time - well, maybe a couple - that's it.

There's a summer's worth of sailing in the Chesapeake Bay.

If you are able, take 2 weeks (or less) to make a run for New England, cruise New England for 4 weeks and then head back south for 2 weeks leaving one extra week spare. That would test your 'offshore' stomach.

For my money, NYC is fun for a couple of days, but there are no decent places to dock near Manhattan which aren't really rolly due to all the traffic. Plus all dockage is expensive there.

OTOH, Long Island sound all the way up to Nantucket offers some truly superb cruising with plenty anchoring / cheap mooring opportunities.

You probably don't have time to do Cape Cod justice, but it's an easy and unique trip through the canal.

Just head north. It's all good cruising.
