NC/VA/MD Marina Recomendation

Hi folks....

We are looking for ideas concerning a nice marina to stay at for a few months this summer.

Wish list:
1. NC/VA/MD
2. Monthly rate
3. "End-of the road" type location, quiet with little traffic.
4. Unmetered electric.
5. Simple amenities, like Wifi and beater courtesy car.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

Thanks
Dave

Try Scott's Creek Marina in Portsmouth, VA. They are about as "end of the road" as you can get by car. By boat they are reasonably close to the main body of the Elizabeth River with good access to the ICW or the bay. I don't know if the electric is metered or not. Give them a call.

Calverts Marina Solomon's, MD
Courtesy car, not sure of what rate you would get for 3 months, ask for HH dock which has 3 liveaboards who keep it quiet, secure and have some good parties, end of the road. Cheat, safe, secure and quiet and great sunsets.

There's a website Marinas.com, World's Marinas Portal, and Marina Directory that has a pretty comprehensive listing of marinas by state, with reviews on some, and you can click on the links to check out their services and fees. Activecaptain.com is also a good source.

I would become a member of activecaptain.com, all the info you need there for all marinas in the requested area.

I am located in the Little Creek, Va area, it is a very nice area with everything you need within walking distance. There are several marinas within this area so amenities will vary.

Good Luck!

River Dunes in Oriental, NC is about as nice as it gets. It is out in the boonies, but they have floating docks, a nice club house, hot tubs, swimming pool, bikes, wifi, exercise room and primo showers with AC. Oriental is a ten minute drive. They have a very nice loaner car, so no beater, and very competitive long term rates. I don't care for marinas much and stay on a private mooring nearby, but we use River Dunes for all their services before and after cruises and feel at home there.

Spring Cove in Rock Hall, MD or one of the others nearby such as Gratitude Marina. About as "end of the road" as you can get. The silence may be deafening. Couple of magnificent restaurants there too.

I think with a Cat you will need to cast a wide net to find a marina that will easily accommodate the beam required. I think you will find rates increase as you head farther north. VA Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck, and MD Potomac are quite end of the road with the VA eastern shore more like end of the world.

You are a tad behind the timeline for securing the best places for summer but in the more out of the way places there still may be a spot. Places easy to get to from the big city are going to be more difficult and expensive.

Check your insurance to see if VA/MD has an advantage for you compared to NC. The VA border is often used as a boundary rating insurance coverage.

No offense, but Whittaker Point is now a dump and is falling apart. Lots of infighting about who should pay to keep it up and in the meantime, it continues to need more work.

Bridgepoint is closed due to an insurance dispute after Hurricane Irene. It has be bought (supposedly) and is getting a full refit by summer's end.

River Dunes is very nice, but VERY expensive. $8/ft plus $165/month for club dues, it could be the most expensive marina on the Neuse.

Matthews Point might be worth a look. I don't know the price, but it's had a refit too and is supposed to be pretty nice now. Very secluded.

Georgetown Yacht Basin, on the north end of the Chesapeake, fits the bill. They also cater to cats, with a very wide lifting sling ...

York River Yacht Haven on Sarah Creek and Crown Point Marina on Perrin Creek; north of York River, both have reviews on Active Captain.
