Re: Can I Sail to Cuba ?

Last year I was boarded about 30 + miles East of Key West by Homeland Security around 0330. They checked all my passengers, ran their IDs and looked around the boat. Wanted to know where I just sailed from and where I was headed. Just be careful, as someone said you could be spending a lot of money to see Cuba now.

Re: Can I Sail to Cuba ?

On a cruise ship in mid-Atlantic I had a brief conversation with a woman who parents left Cuba for Florida decades ago. Her family had an appliance store. The government confiscated/stole all their property and destroyed their livelihood. No doubt this was repeated tens of thousands of times. It wasn't just "evil" corporations (representing mostly retirement savings of individuals) which the Cuban government robbed.

I wouldn't spend money in Cuba until its government compensates its victims or at least until all the Castro boys are dust.

Smallpox, rotgut and famine got the stoic ones early.

Re: May I Sail to Cuba ?

Don't get me started...half my family got replaced by sheep in Scotland, and the other half by wheat in Ireland.

No one in Cuba, thank god.

To Sv/Alchemy
Doesnt matter which route you take to Cuba. The US Coast Guard patrols 12-15 miles off the Cuban coast.
Have been questioned south and north bound every year for the past 5 years. They ask for boat registry and passport numbers so coming from Bermuda would not help.

Re: May I Sail to Cuba ?

By what right does a USCG stop a Canadian registered boat in international waters?

pirate Re: May I Sail to Cuba ?

Did you not know... the US of A reserves the right to stop any vessel of any nationality on the high sea's...
However... this is not a situation tolerated when a US vessel is treated the same way...

In this example an apparent police action. (I assume you meant any foreign vessel)

CGC Midgett returns from international patrol « Coast Guard Compass

Re: May I Sail to Cuba ?

Have never had problem with US Coast Guard. They were always friendly and professional. What right do they have to stop a Canadian vessel in international waters?

The United States has treaties with most nations, including Canada, to allow them to stop and inspect pretty much any vessel on the high seas. Especially if they "suspect" it is traveling to or from the United States. But they don't have to have those suspicions. Chuck

Re: May I Sail to Cuba ?

Who edited the title to "May I sail to Cuba?" "May I" is asking permission to do so, "Can I" is asking if doing so is possible. I'm pretty sure the original poster isn't asking the permission of this forum to go to Cuba. It should be "Can I sail to Cuba."
