having been to most of the francophone ex-colonies of the world,iv'e allways found that creole,patois,or my bad french is by far easier to communicate in than basque or breton with the natives!

though breton,might be usefull here in cornwall!!!!!

It was back in the 70's - won't say that every second frenchman spoke English with an American accent. Not that many spoke English .

I may of course have been misled (or lied to - to simply shut me up ).

I just spent 8 days in Guadeloupe. Around the marinas, etc. Almost everyone speaks passable English and most speak fluently. I did not notice any rudeness whatsoever. I did notice a profound like for my money just like everyplace. The local economy there really seems to be suffering from Europes economic woes.

Being originally from France and now living in Québec, your comment is rather surprising, lots of French tourists now visit or immigrate to Quebec and they don't have problems communicating with locals, of course there are some expressions they don't understand but overall there are no problems. Not the same with Cajuns, they definitly re-invented the French language over there and it is a challenge for French and Quebecois as well!

We just cruised thru the islands, including Martinique and loved it all. Ocassionally, we resorted to pointing and charades in the French Islands. Don't worry - most all speak English. There are wonderful things to see/do; great anchorages, etc. Go to my blog Finally Fun!. Click on, go to right hand side and click on the Caribbean Adventures section.
