Re: Marathon to Bimini

Pretty much anywhere in the Keys to Bimini is a pretty easy trip in good weather. The trick is to get out into the stream and head east or close to it depending on the speed of your boat. The stream will take care of most if not all of your northerly component. The further down the keys you go the more easting you need to do. Fortunately the stream flows mostly east in the lower keys giving you a nice boost. Do you have a more specific question?

Re: Marathon to Bimini

I did that trip in 1980 in a Macgregor 25. I left in the afternoon to clear the reef and arrived in the daylight. Dodging freighters and thunderstorms all night and using a direction finder we ended up at Cat Cay, eight miles south. Not bad for guess and by golly navigation. Really loved Bimini but we had to hangout for the tide to change to get into the harbor. A bit too much current for our wee boat. We spent two weeks there before trying to cross the bank which was aborted by hurricane Allen. Three days later we back at Bimini, a great place for snorkling.

I would give it about 95% that the winds will more or less easterly; NE, E or SE. That's the nature of the trade winds. If you try for something out of the west you better time it right because in Nov if the winds shift away from the east it is usually associated with a cold front that can make the Gulf Stream quite nasty.

For some reason I was thinking of Marathon in Greece when I saw the thread's title.

Now that would be a very nice cruise, but would probably have to budget more than a couple of weeks vacation time to do it.
