A "decent thief"? One of the best oxymorons I've seen in a while. But I do know what you meant, i.e. a well-equipped thief!

Re: Lock-up the dingy in the Exumas?

Always locked our dingy one way or another, why not? As mentioned try to get a replacement down there quickly! Want to be without the family car for a couple or 4 weeks possibly-no fun! The newbies some one referred to are usually the ones inconsiderate of others by not using a stern anchor at the dingy dock, so as to provide more room for others and to stop damage by rubbing each other etc. Not the smart ones with a lock on them. Sure a good thief can always get what he wants, but he usually takes the easiest/newest object he sees! That won't be our dingy. Enjoy The Exumas!!!

"We always just took the kill switch with us."

If you are talking about taking the plastic clip and lanyard, this really will not deter too many. A piece of light line wrapped around the switch where the clip goes will allow it to be started.

Take a cable.... why not? You may lose the dingy in Nassau on the way to the Exumas!

Angry Re: Lock-up the dingy in the Exumas?

Been sailing to Exumas most every Jan from Florida Keys for 22 yrs. Never locked dinghy. Only problem I ever saw was a guy who pulled his dinghy up on beach Chat ‘N Chill bar across rom Georgetown. Came out to beach after dark. Was yelling his dinghy was stolen and demanding the police come immediately.
Next morning vessel was found across bay neatly tied up to Peace and Plenty dock.
Guy was drinking when tide rose up and floated his poorly secured vessel across bay. Some kind Bahamian tied it up properly.
If only stupid was painful.

Bahamians hate inflatables and mercury outboards. I've got the set, good to go.

Re: Lock-up the dingy in the Exumas?

I never lock the dinghy. Including in the Exumas where there hardly is anyone to even steal it. I do sometimes take the kill switch to make it harder for the the professional thieves that even a lock wouldn't stop.

Sure there's no reason not to lock up your dinghy, however the vast majority of folks do not. The same way the vast majority of folks don't use a stern anchor on their dinghy at a dock.

We are lucky enough to own a Porta Bote, things so ugly it will probably be the last dinghy that goes missing.

Put a Yamaha 2-stroke on it, and it'll disappear.

We have a Suzuki 2.5hp, I’m guessing we’re golden!

Agreed. Am thinking about putting the Suzuki 2,5 sticker on my stickerless Tohatsu 20. Or some propane powered sticker.

Re: Lock-up the dingy in the Exumas?

Have made countless trips to the Exuma Cays. Never locked the dink or the boat for that matter while ashore and never had any issues. I do pull the kill switch though.
Check out my pictures in the Cays with the dink.

Re: Lock-up the dingy in the Exumas?

I lost a dingy and motor in Nassau some time ago. It was up, out of the water hanging off my davits. I was not happy.
