Re: Location for winter living aboard and cruising.

GREAT thread! As stated earlier, the Charleston area is best in the autumn-really Sept. through the end of October is the best time of year. The Folly Beach area is cool, and dockage is much cheaper than Charleston, though local knowledge is essential for navigation.

When heading south do not overlook Stuart Florida. The historic downtown is awesome, the beaches around there are great. Two hours down anchor in Peck Lake in Hobie Sound-beautifully pristine.

You have a great plan and much to look forward to, good luck!

Re: Location for winter living aboard and cruising.

We are in our fourth season in the eastern Caribbean. Cruising season is November to June. The boat stays in Chaguaramos, Trinidad at Power Boats where it is tented and air conditioned. Check out their website. It is totally out of the hurricane zone. It is also a great place to explore in the many island tours, rental cars, bicycle into the rainforest. Also Peaks Mariana is adjacent and also good. There is 24 hour security and zero worry about issues in the yards. There are also excellent trades for repairs. Many cruisers prefer Grenada but there are fewer competent trades available. We are members of Salty Dawgs and OCC (OceanCruising Club) we find great community in these groups and lots of help is available with the Dawgs for the transit and cruising venues. We are currently in Antigua renewing acquaintances with three years worth of island friends. You can make the cruise down with the Dawg rally from Hampton, Va. check their site.

Boot Key Harbor on Marathon Key (mid way down FL keys) is an amazing cruisers community with great mix of permanent live-aboards & 6 month snow fish. Great people to meet. Wonderful array of restaurants. Daily activities - pickle ball, bocci ball, pot lucks... Very easy sailing access to FL gulf coast (Everglades to panhandle), BAHAMAS, Dry Tortugas, other Keys, and good snorkeling & beaches.
