Living aboard in St. Thomas, Usvi

Hi every one. Moving to St. Thomas soon and I am wondering where the best place for long term anchoring is. I am not trying to do the marina thing and I hear moorings are a bit pricy these. Any help would be Great.

Welcome to the forum.

Have you searched this site? This subject has been covered pretty well. I'm glad to help if you have specific questions.

Anchoring location will probably be largely dependent upon your employment. There are two general areas: The harbor at Charlotte Amalie (including Water Island) and the other is the east end near Redhook.

I know many people who work at UVI. Water Island will work with a fast dinghy or Brewers Bay by the airport and UVI.

Most locals don't know where Druiff Bay is and refer to it as Honeymoon. I don't know why, it's just the way it is.

I don't think I've ever seen Brewers with nobody in it. Good luck with your job search.

Forget Redhook.... it's hard pan and holding is terrible.... at least on the outer part before the first dockage.

Curious if you did this, are still in STT or what.

This is pretty much exactly what we are looking to do.

My family and I are moving to STT in August so I can attend UVI starting this fall. We plan on being landlubbers until we can find our boat and move aboard. I've been trying to see if anchoring in Brewers Bay is the best option and was going to see if I could convince someone at the school to let us use their dock for our dink (since I'm a student it's not exactly "public use") an park our car there. I know a lot of people use water island as well, but brewers bay would just be more perfect.

Would I be able to anchor in brewers bay as a liveaboard? At least for half the year? We take pride in our homes and boats so we wouldn't be trashy looking hobos and either pump out once a week or go on weekend sails to dump out well outside the 3 mile mark. I think hurricane season we'd try to find a mooring on the north side and ride out major storms on land if need be.
