Key West to Isla Mujueres

We're leaving from Miami. Looking to cross over to Isla Mujueres from Key West 2nd week of May. Then on down to Rio. I would be interested in everyones thoughts on this passage. I'm especially concerned about making a good weather window and having to fight the current through the Gulf Stream and the Yucatan.

I would rather go south through the Bahammas ,through the windward passage , Then run with the current and trades around the south side of Cuba , Jammacia , Cayman then up to Isla. My concern on this passage would be the approaching hurricane season. Any thoughts ? Thanks

As I understand it...there is a counter-current off the north cuban coast that you can make use of. Suggest heading to Key West in the Hawk Channel then jumping across to 12 miles off the Cuba coast and proceeding west. Much shorter trip this way.

We hope to make the Rio prior to the season. As long as the weather window holds I figure it's the best way. Thanks
