Jacksonville, FL ICW Anchorage?

Greetings!

Are there any subscribers with experience with the following anchorage? Are there any gotchas (bottom composition, currents, mosquitos, etc) that one should be aware of? (This is for a friend of mine who hopes to stop there on his way South in a month or two)

...that anchorage I was telling you about is in the Fort George River which is about 2 miles north of the St.Johns river. It's right off the ICW/sisters creek and looks to have a fort or something on Fort george Island. This would be a convienent stop between St. Simons and St. Augustine.

Thanks in advance and happy holidays to all!

Look at this link for information concerning Ft. George River anchorage Cruiser’s Net » AnchoragesEF - All

I would not concern myself with mosquitos this time of year. In Jacksonville the concern would lean more toward ice and cold.

Thanks, Jentine! The link pretty much gives me what I was looking for - agree on the mosquito comment as we have freeze warnings for tonight at JAX Happy holidays!

Big tide there - 6+ feet. There is a small anchorage just North of Sister's creek bridge. Some anchor just in or outside the entrance to the ICW on the Souith side of the river. Locals use Back River just down river from Blont Island. Calm and protected anchorage.

I anchor in Ft George River quite often. Just passed it yesterday. Never had mosquitoes there and there is usually a good breeze blowing so no no seeums. In the spring it's a favourite spot for small boats to party but they go right up the river and it's not a problem. Keep close to the right bank going in and anchor in the middle after marker #3. Don't anchor too close to the left bank as it shallows up fast. About 6 foot tide.

Thanks, Speciald - My friend probably anticipates the tidal range as he currently keeps his boat at St Simons Island; pretty much the same... The alternative you mentioned will be very helpful to him I am sure... I'll pass it on - Happy holidays to you! Sailndive
