Info on Long Island Sound

Folks,

We are planning on making our way up to LIS this summer but have never been there.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to cruise the LIS in the traditional sense so we would be looking to settle down into a cruiser centric location where we can take long weekend trips. We are looking for somewhere that has good access to an international airport, is safe during hurricane season, maybe not to hot?

Suggestions?

Go to Sound Yachts web site. Ted Novakowski owns it and is a broker but he also has a kinda crusing guide on there that you can look at. If questions contact Ted and he may be able to give you a hint or two.

He has helped us out more than once. Tell him chuck on SoulMates said hi.

The only international airports there are at the east end/New York City (JFK). Providence, RI, and Boston, MA both have international flights I believe. Bradley (Hartford/Springfield) is about 45 minutes drive north of New Haven. So if that is a limiting factor, you're going to have a hard time finding a place. If it were me, I'd probably try to locate on Naragansett Bay and figure out transportation to Providence/Green Airport.

JFK is reasonably close... You might want to pick a location mid Island and go east, west and north to CT. I would suggest Northport, Oyster Bay/ColdSprings or Port Jefferson. Mooring and anchorages are available. The travel time to JFK will be 1hr - 1.5Hrs

Re: Info on Long Island Sound

From Oyster Bay Kennedy and Laguardia are about 50 minutes away...or were when I grew up there. Traffic might be worse now.

From a heat perspective, the farther east you go the better off you'll be, and the eastern sound has better sailing and more interesting destinations. Newport is certainly the logical base as it's close to Providence and puts you within easy striking distance of the best cruising grounds...Block, Peconic Bay, Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket etc.

Another option would be Sag Harbor. You could take the LIRR train to Kennedy or Laguardia, changing at Jamaica, or to MacArthur airport (mid-island) which has grown in recent years and is quite usable.

Are there mooring fields in that area of New England like you would find at Dinner Key or Marathon?
