Hampton / Yorktown, VA Area Expert Needed

we're headed north on the ICW through NC up to VA for for a week or so before continuing to parts further north. Admiral's family lives in Yorktown VA, has anyone anchored in the york river before? depths look somewhat acceptible for anchoring and the city has a riverwalk right there we might be able to use for a dinghy dock -- any anchorages in the area anyone can recommend? We draw ~6ft -- I was told to look at back creek, but on my charts in looks really shallow

thoughts?

Thanks!

To add a bit to Bill's advice, the York River Yacht Haven is a very good marina, located in Sarah's Creek on the north side of the bridge. There's a really good restaurant there, as well.

I've never berthed at Riverwalk, on the south side of the bridge in Yorktown, but the docks there are normally populated with boats of various sizes, power and sail, so there must be a way to arrange for dockage. I wouldn't recommend anchoring in the river unless you feel assured of fairly calm weather for the duration--it's wide open, with no protection.

The Yorktown town docks are nice, and give protection if you are on the inside. I have a phone number of 757-890-3370 and the name of Paul, if he is still there. There are also a few mooring balls there as well.
If you go to Sarah's Creek beware the marine police as they really inforce no wake.
