Re: Cruising the Florida Keys

I suppose the usual would be Rodriguez Key for anchoring out. I am guessing you will be taking Hawk Channel down.

With a 7' draft you should be ok, but don't wander to close to the Island. It can go to 4' pretty fast.

Rodriguez Key Anchorage
Lat/Lon: near 25 03.373 North/080 27.285

Other places are between the bridges at Bahia Honda State Park.

If you want a marina you could go to Key Largo, but will have to wait until high tide to get in.

Not sure if I am allowed to link out or not... but I suppose someone will tell me soon if I am not.

That 7' draft is a limiting factor, when sailing the keys. Sail on the Atlantic side! Good luck! Mauritz

Re: Cruising the Florida Keys

A 5' 1" draft is a limiting factor in the Keys as well!

Rodriguez is a decent anchorage but study your charts closely and set yourself in a spot so that if you drag anchor at all, you won't get in trouble. Boot Key Harbor in Marathon is definitely fine for 7" but stay dead center of the channel markers. The power lines that you cross under into the channel are 65" at mean high tide so watch for that as well if you have a tall mast. When pulling in to Boot Key, hail Boot Key Harbor City Marina on 16 and tell them your draft so they put you on a deep enough mooring ball. Do not attempt the gulf side anywhere.

If you want a anchorage or dock with 7' draft in Geiger Key area give me a call 3053040931, I also have a boat with 7' draft and have been here for 32 years.

Kind of odd sailing the Keys without charts. Do you have google earth and gps?

I'm sure he will get charts before he gets down here. I wouldn't imagine trying to go anywhere with a 7' draft without charts.
