Cruising Northern Brazil

So an opportunity might be coming my way to move to northern Brazil and work again in education.

Fine, I can do that. Might be fun.

But does anyone know of the cruising opportunities in Northern Brazil?

My idea would be to sell out here and buy a sailboat in Natal area or so.
Cruise in that area for a couple of years while at this job.
Then cruise north to the Caribbean for a nice retirement.

Anyone with experience in this area of the world? Those who have dreamt of this and researched it?

Cruising places?
Brokers?
Marinas (I have looked on active captain and there are some)
Just the idea of an American owning a boat in Brazil?

Only just beginning the process now, but I desire to look at the boating aspect of life before I could really take any job these days.

Thanks.

Re: Cruising Northern Brazil

Plenty of wind for sailing in the northeast of Brazil! It's a long, mostly linear coast so not too many protected places for cruising (compared to the southeast of Brazil).

With the pandemic, boat prices have skyrocketed in Brazil, though the weak Real means they are not too expensive in USD.

As a foreigner, you can buy and keep a boat in Brazil if it's flagged here.

Where would you be located?

Re: Cruising Northern Brazil

Thanks for the reply! And thanks Gord for the welcome!
Ive been lurking here for years as Ive been a trawler owner and on the Trawler forum. But sailing is STILL deep in me.

I would be in Fortaleza, maybe some in Recife.

So maybe better to buy, keep a boat in the Carribean somewhere?

I am really not familiar from a cruising POV in this pat of the world. But am anxious to learn.

Any sites you can point me towards?

Thanks.

Why keep it in the Caribbean? No hurricanes in Brazil and you can enjoy your boat close to home. There is great sailing out of Fortaleza (in the trades) and you can keep your boat in a marina or club in the city.

For sites, google "veleiros a venda, Brasil" and see what comes up. There are a few Brazilian brokers on facebook that list boats. You might have to go to the southeast (Rio/SP) to find more options. As I mentioned, the market is nuts at the moment and boats are listed and sold pretty quickly.
