Covid19 - Returning to USA via Canada

Our vessel has been wintering in VA and we need to utilize Canadian waters and the Seaway to return to Lake Ontario.
Scuttlebutt has the Erie Canal Will be closed to navigation due to budget short falls from covid19.
We are now looking at trucking our schooner when emergency conditions subside.
Any suggestions/ experience with boat movers would be most appreciated.

Depending on a lot of factors, hopefully from Albany to Rochester, ny
Or some port in MA if navigation on the Hudson is barred.

Where is the vessel presently?

The Chesapeake is closed to recreational boating, so if it is presently there it will not be moving by water until the Governor decides to relax the lockdown.

Re: Covid19 - Returning to USA via Canada

So far there's been no official announcements regarding the NY canals being impacted by COVID-19. It's possible that may change in the next few weeks before they open, however. At a minimum, I'd expect you could get up the Hudson to at least the Troy lock. Based on how things are going so far, I'd say it's unlikely for the Hudson to be restricted.

The Seaway is currently closed to all recreational traffic, however, so that option is out until something changes.

If/when you do end up making it to Rochester, let me know and we'll give you a wave if we see you coming in. We'll hopefully be launching some time in May based on current information, so when weather and time permits, we'll be on the boat in some form.

Re: Covid19 - Returning to USA via Canada

There will be a flood of new rules and regulations and this is just starting

Here is a taste.
https://www.nepia.com/industry-news/...t-on-shipping/
Even just refueling seems to be an issue.
In general...crew not allowed to go on shore.

I am just getting into screening google for relevant info but I assume for recreational boating the changes will be much more severe as it is not considered an existencial activity/priority

Most countries on the popular cruising routes have now closed to visiting yachts in reaction due to the COVID-19 health emergency. Finding a country for safe haven is becoming much harder at this time and best advice is to stay where you are if the situation allows. Follow the links in this report to stay updated, so that you can plan accordingly when restrictions begin to ease.

Re: Covid19 - Returning to USA via Canada

All none essential travel in Canada is currently strongly not advised and in some areas prohibited and enforced so if you are currently n Canada you need to stay put. If you are entering Canada from outside there is compulsory 2 week isolation period so you would not be allowed ashore for any reason and must either bring supplies or arrange for them to be delivered to you boat. You would need to document this in your log otherwise you may get locked down again if you move to another port. You also need to discuss this with the coast guard and check if any passages, ports or marinas are closed to recreational traffic on your route. You will need to be doing this trip as essential travel but that could include repatriation to your home country.
