Charter Windward Islands

Next February I am going to charter a yacht from Saint Martin. I have got a good offer from http://www.windward-islands.net/.
I am looking for somebody who can confirm their reliability.

Re: Charter Windward Islands

It would appear from their website that they are an agent for other actual charter companies. You should be able to deal directly with the charter company and get a better price than going through an additional layer of cost

Indeed this is true -- they broker charters for other charter companies. I had a negative experience with them some years ago where the fact that they stood between me and the actual charter company caused communications problems which cost me money and aggravation.

I would likewise advise dealing directly with the charter company -- they are not hard to find.

I've chartered with Horizon out of Simpson Bay before and would also suggest the Moorings/Sunsail. Moorings/Sunsail leave out of Oyster Pond which is really the best location for a charter. Or, Best Sail out of Anse Marcel.

I was going to say why are they calling St. Martin a Windward Island, as everything I've read previously called it a Leeward Island, but this wiki says it depends on who you are as to which islands are known as windward and leeward.

Re: Charter Windward Islands

I assume you mean Sint Maarten - the Dutch side. Horizon has a limited fleet in Simpson Lagoon but Moorings/Sunsail has about 50 boats in Oyster Pond. The exit from Oyster Pond looks scary but it is 30 feet deep in the channel. They have added a customs office in their facility that makes clearing in and out easy. Plan on loosing most of your first day to provisioning and boat orientation and having a short day at the end as most flights leave for the US by 3PM. You can stay at Captain Oliver's hotel after your charter if you need to. A new grocery is to be added this Fall at the facility to allow for self-provisioning or you can take a taxis to Grande Mache which is an American style store that even sells booze at duty free prices. I have kept my boat in the pond for the last two Winters and am quite familiar with where to go and what to do should you need suggestions.

He's talking about the company -- Windward Islands Charters. Not characterizing where is St. Martin.
