Caribbean Base ( on Shore )

Looks like my 1.5 years Caribbean adventure may happen pretty soon, definitely much sooner than I could imagine. This however, brings up a new question. So here it is. Part of our crew (wives) may not be able to be fully live-aboard. That is why I am looking for the suggestion what would be a good place (island) for a shore base, where they can rent decent quiet apartment / house fairly close to marina or mooring from 6 month to 1 year. And how much it may cost. It does not have to be wealthy, entertaining area, just safe place with water, food and nice people. Probably another requirement would be an easy visa policy since they both have eastern European passports.

Grenada is a good base: good anchorages almost out of the hurricane belt, reasonable prices, close to marvelous cruising in the Grenadines and as safe as any other island but you would need to check residency rules.

If those Eastern European passports are EU passports than the French Islands are a possibility but they are more expensive.

Nicest place we have been is the Yucatan Coast of Mexico and prices are 1/2 to 2/3 of the rest of the Caribbean

We base out of Anse Marcel French side of St Martin

Very safe. Good air connections on and off the island. No importation hassles like on British islands (who want to extract duty on every part you bring in). Very good chandleries and every marine service. I have heard some of the security issues in St Martin lately but Anse Marcel is very safe. There are condos adjacent to the marina that are available for rent fairly reasonable.
