Canada, United States Urge Citizens To Leave Haiti

Canada, & U.S. urge citizens to leave Haiti, due to 'deteriorating' safety amid fuel crisis

Haiti - AVOID NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL
Avoid non-essential travel to Haiti due to severe fuel shortages, the risk of kidnapping and civil unrest. The security situation is deteriorating quickly. If you’re in Haiti and your presence isn't essential, consider leaving if you can do so safely.

Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince, Haiti
The Department of State urges U.S. citizens to make plans to depart Haiti now via commercial means. U.S. citizens should carefully consider the risks of traveling to or remaining in Haiti in light of the current security situation and infrastructure challenges. Widespread fuel shortages may limit essential services in an emergency, including access to banks, money transfers, urgent medical care, internet and telecommunications, and public and private transportation options. The U.S. Embassy is unlikely to be able to assist U.S. citizens in Haiti with departure if commercial options become unavailable. Seats on commercial flights currently remain available.

Boy unless you have been living under a rock the past few months I would hope you were out in front of the US Government on this one.

They start by advising against "non-essential" travel; this is the next level which really means "if thing go south we may not be able to help you get out, so do it now."

Don't know about the US, but Canada has evacuated non-essential embassy personnel. This seems to happen once or twice a year in Haiti.

Been going on for decades. Those who know the culture and place are fine. Embassy staffers, not so much.

As Baltic2007 said. This sounds like a typical DUH! notice from the gov't. Pick a spot in the world. Any spot. That spot is probably better than Haiti right now. And as far as being ok with the locals if you are one with their culture, it's kinda like me, a fat redneck Texan going into Mexico. Yeah, hablo la lingua but no way, Jose am I anything but a gringo with a dollar sign over my head and a target on my back.

Sounds like even the Haitians are taking this advice and heading for Central America, Mexico, and the U.S.

Haiti has been a mess for as many years as I can remember. They may have been better off under Papa Doc. Why would anyone go there.
