Best Islands for Distinctive Rums

Can anyone recommend which of the islands have interesting local rums? We are fans of Meyer's, Mt Gay, Pussers and we hate Captain Morgan, are there any others we should keep an eye out for in our upcoming travels?

Howdy and Ahoy! Welcome Aboard CF.

Rum is a topic that has many opinions, as it is a matter of taste and exposure.

My favorite is Brugal Anejo Grand Reserve from the Dominican Republic.

I was wondering...why just islands? Since several of my favorites are mainland produced. But since you broke the rules right off the bat...

Nicaragua. Agree, older Flor de Caña rums are quite nice.

Guatemala. Ron Zacapa Centenario (blended 23 year)...a true sipping rum. Their (Ron Botran) 12 year is also a very good mixing rum.

Venezuela. Produces a number of very good rums including my fav Diplomatico...right up there with Zacapa.

Martinique. As far as islands go, Martinique is a serious contender with a number of high quality brands. Visited the St James distillery there last year...way cool...yummy rum too.

Cuba. Not known for high end rum, but I do like their Havana Club Añejo as a mixing rum.

St Lucia for Admiral Rodney. I has won a few rum tasting competitions

A very nice sipping rum, bold taste but smooth. My wife tried it and hated it and the distillers rep stated that was because it was "A mans rum" He gave her something else and she enjoyed it much more.

If you want to find your favorite island rum, then I suggest that you take your boat and go find it.

As for your comment about weed, your state may legalize it, but if your boat is in salt water in the US, then it is still ilegal.

Virtually every island in the Caribbean has at least a couple of small-batch rum producers. You could spend a lifetime stumbling drunkenly from one island to the next and still not try them all.

Re: Best Islands for Distinctive Rums

The rum you DON'T want to buy but whose factory you definitely DO want to tour is Rivers rum in Grenada. The distillery looks like it hasn't been altered since the 19th century, complete with operational water mill wheel to crush the cane. Its a trip but the stuff is pure lighter fluid.

Re: Best Islands for Distinctive Rums

I am a big fan of Guatamala's Ron Zacappa Centenario (already mentioned above) and a great website to visit to help with your quest is Welcome to the - Ministry of Rum. The site's proprietor is a connoisseur of great rums and knows so much about all rums, particularly from the Caribbean. He often holds seminars across the US mostly and occasionally in the Caribbean. When he is cruising himself, he will also have impromptu rum tastings on board his or other vessels. I have not had the good fortune yet but I hold out hope of one such day.
