'Be South of Finisterre by October 15th'

I read in Lin and Larry Pardeys book European Adventure they heard some folklore to be south of Cape Finisterre before the 15th of October.

Now have a look at PassageWeather (et al) and look at the North Atlantic.

That area is coppin' a bit now. But by this weekend it looks like it will be copping a real pasting.

Its a sensible bit of folk-lore in that after that date you arfe much more likely to get hit with bad weather to the North as the European season is getting pretty wintry. However, common-sense applies and one must also use the extensive weather checking facilities that are obtainable for that area! Tony

From my painful experience even 15 of oct is too late too close to the equinox. I'd suggest 15 th sept as a be gone date from that area

It will be very rough these coming days , the airports in the Azores are all closed, courtesy of Hurricane Otto , who I just met as a Tropical Storm on my way to Tortola.

As to Finisterre , I have crossed Biscay in January and December and sometimes nothing much happened ... and I have been through gales there in the Summer. It's like the insurance clause "has to be North of Cape Hatteras by the 15th of June" or something. A probabilities game.

Mark, what do you care--you're already down in the Canaries, (which was a smart move). Planning to go north now??
