I would suggest getting to the marina right for 11 am so you could be in the park by 12 - there's a lot of stuff to do there. And don't forget to book the marina a few days in advance (better yet when you get airplane tickets). Restaurants are crazy expensive on Paradise Island, so in the evening we took a taxi to Fish Fry's. It's a local favorite with a bunch of fish shacks together, music, etc.
Right ... love that and added to my notes ... thanks

Re: Bahamas - Do's and Dont's

Can anyone tell me if there is any truth in the rumors we hear that if ones boat disturbs the sand below ones keel in the Bahamas, there is a spot fine of US$2500?

I am told the locals use this law to make money off sailors as if they see you do it they confront you for a saving to keep quiet!

Personally finding this hard to believe but it has been mentioned to me ... any one?

First time I've ever heard this one. Wouldn't bet $2500 but would wager at least a couple of Rand that this is just a silly rumor.

On the other hand, whack a coral reef in FL or dig a trench in the eel grass on the flats and you might be facing a fine in the US.

Re: Bahamas - Do's and Dont's

an incredibly stupid rumor. in fact, you will have less contact with the police or bdf (bahama defence force) than with the local gestapo here in the states.

now, if you really want to get a big fine, just run aground in the florida keys. if you are foolish enough to get on the radio to ask for sea tow, the water nazi's will arrive first to 'document' the damage you've caused to the eelgrass and levy a fine, often in the thousands of dollars....

Re: Bahamas - Do's and Dont's

From our information on CF and in discussion with some local sailors, we have decided that George Town - Emerald Bay will be a starting point. Apparently a restaurant called 'Catch a Fire' is a must see?
We hear a lot about Exuma Cays (Big Rock Cut), Wax Cay ... in between still to be decided with a visit to Elethra, Harbour Island (Briland) and South Cut before dropping off the kids at Nassau ... any comments on this would be appreciated!

Re: Bahamas - Do's and Dont's

I would ease north with a stop at Lee Stocking Island, nice anchorages, and good snorkeling at the North end, then go inside at Rudder Cay, good diving at the rock in the center of the cut and anchor in cove off rudder. Then up to Black Point or Staniel Cay and Thunderball Grotto. Don't go to Staniel Cay Yacht Club to eat, IMHO it is over priced and not as good as "Taste and Sea" on the beach just south. Then while there do the "Pig Beach at Big Majors Spot. Then north to Cambridge Cay for some very good diving at the south between Rocky Dundas and Caimbridge. Then make the jump over to Eleuthera, or continue north with stops in the "Sea Land Park". The north end of Highbourne is a very nice anchorage with a reef right there, then go through Fleming Channel and over to Spanish Wells and Harbor Island.
