Any advice on Belem, Brazil

We are in Recife, Brazil for a couple of days on our way to the Caribbean. We have thoughts on stopping over at Belem, in the state of Pará, Brazil. We would appreciate your advice and recommendations on Belem as we are concerned about safety and crime - whether it is indeed worth the effort to visit.

Re: Any advice on Belem, Brazil

Belem is the one place in Brazil where I have not stopped while sailing. Last time I asked that question to the local sailors in Bahia and Recife (who know a lot about their flavor of NE Brazil security or lack thereof) told me I should not plan to go in without prior arrangement with members of the club in Belem.
If you send me a pm with your name and email address I will put you in touch with some Brazilian sailors who will put you in touch with the right crowd in Belem. That sort of process has worked very well for me in other Brazilian ports.
Cheers
Charlie
