What kind of life would that be on a long passage?

On the contrary, on our boat, the off watches at night live normal life, at least in good weather, cooking, reading, even watching movies! I have red lighting to make it comfortable while preserving a modicum of night vision.

Submarine is an excellent choice.

Because when they get a visual on a little sailboat .....who's to say there is not a Sub lurking near by?

I love it.
