Wintering in Turkey

After spending this winter in Sicily in we are now considering spending the next one in Turkey, living on the boat and exploring the country.

We heard a lot of good things about Setur Fineke Marina.

Can anybody tell me the negatives about this marina?

What are similar alternatives?

I don’t know the marina, but you’ll probably love Turkey. Plan to gain weight, as the food is a step above anywhere else. The antiquities and historic sites are amazing.

Give some thought to inflation and how you want to handle it. If the prices look good, you may want to pay up front for the marina...or not depending on where you think the Lira is headed.

We just spent 2 weeks in Istanbul and the Lira was going crazy. Before arrival it was 10 to the dollar, we arrived, it was 12 to the dollar and when we flew out it was closing in on 18 to the dollar. It's since settle back to around 13.75 but still a lot of fluxuation.

At the same time, prices were going up by the day...and I can't really blame them. It worked out great for us...not so much for the locals.

Otherwise, yes we loved our time there and the people were great.

It sounds good to hear that you are coming to Turkey. Setur is Turkey's oldest and most experienced Marina chain business. The marinas in the west and south of Turkey offer you affordable accommodation in different places. The price of Setur Marina in Finike is quite affordable. There are also marinas that offer reasonable prices between October and April for wintering. I am in Sığacık Teos Marina. If there are subjects you want to learn, I will be happy to help.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure we will love Turkey. So much history and culture!


I'm evaluating Finike versus Kas.

Fineke seems more sheltered, but Kas seems to be located in a more interesting stretch of coast.

Does anyone have direct experience in wintering in these two marinas?

Pros and cons?

They built Mobius in Turkey and have been staying at marinas summer and winter so they might be able to give you some insight.

I can tell you its a nice port. There are good services available. The people are nice. It is a reasonable taxi ride to the airport. Accommodations and food are reasonable. The sailing area is fantastic with lots to see.

To my liking, I prefer and stayed in Gocek, just to the north. The D-Marin, Gocek marina is great and has services including classes and rentals.

Please be aware that most major marinas in Turkey are fully booked for the winter. It's one the side effects of Brexit and major bureaucratic issues in Greece for British boats.

There are few issues for British boats other then the 18 month rule. There are significant issues with British re Schengen and this has forced the exodus to Turkey

That's true. And as all of the marinas even the least popular ones are fully booked, the prices went up significantly. PM me and I will try to find you a berth in Marmaris area.
