Re: Wintering in Greece
Here are the offers I had received from D-Marin Didim and Karpaz Gate. It makes the 4300 euro I'm paying at Messolonghi look pretty good doesn't it! Is the feedback on the gypsies based on the thread on YBW Liveaboard forum?
K/T PALARRAN 17,00 m x 8,00 m = 136,00m2

270 days dry park fee is 11.288€, lifting and launching (incll. hull pressure washing) fee is 2.176€ TOTAL : 13.464,00 €
OFFER II :
365 days mooring fee is 13.056€ , lifting and launching fee is 1.360€ TOTAL : 14.416,00 €
Karpaz Gate
We are aware you are requesting 9 months of hard standing, so please note below:
- The price for 9 months of HS for your vessel is 10914 euros
- The price for H&L is 1632 euros
- Total amount is 12546 euros

Wow thats some price differences! The gypsies were brought up by an english couple we met that have cruised the ionion for past 11 years and say they gave watched messalongi "be about to get better" for 4 years now. Just heresay but when i check em out ill pay extra attention to the security side there.
They recommended kalamata quite highly though a bit out of the way ( unless you suddenly have weeks up your sleeve cos your leaving turkey till next year:-)

Re: Wintering in Greece
Has anybody looked at Cyprus - Greek side - I bought my boat with a mooring contract in Latchi - so that remains my cheap option - however, if I am going to find a buyer for her later this year - thats not an ideal place. Latchi is only 24 hours from Turkey - so that suits me.
I believe the waiting list for the berths is 5 years - so I got lucky there...
2 new marinas opened up on the Greek side recently

We wound up hauling out at ionion marine in preveza. Plenty of competition with 4 independent yards. Ionion werent the cheapest but they had the best "vibe". Surreal place at this time of year with around 20 odd boats a day hauling out.

Kalamata. Population 50,000. Lively town, rapidly evolving. Serves very large agricultural area, so excellent diesel and mechanical fabrication services. Local airport serves over 2,500 UK holidaymaker beds in the area with flights two days a week in season.
Less than 3 hours from Athens airport by car, all motorway except the last 3km. Also buses to Athens (Kifissou) every 2 hours except 2200 to 0600, 1 hour onward to airport every 20 min except in the small hours of the morning.
Not so out of the way any more. I expect Kalamata will be full this winter.

Re: Wintering in Greece
Thanks Barra, we will probably do the same. Prices are around 2100 EU for us at Preveza for a lagoon 380. Bar in Montenegro is 3300, Turkey 4000 EU.
Do you think the only additional fee will be about 400 EU for cruising Tax in Greece for the 6 month hard stand period?
We will probably haul out mic October and return Early May, head toward Turkey for a month or 2 before heading slowly West again for the Canaries in Nov/Dec via Sicily and the Balearics. Probably wont do the ARC (but will be crossing the Atlantic).
Keep in touch
Monte.

Re: Wintering in Greece
BTW, I need to get hold of a car in Greece from October till May to travel to the North of France and return. Does anyone know a good way to do that. Options might be long term lease, buying then selling again or hiring one each way if it can be returned in France. I figure its going to cost 1000 euro or so whatever option. Any ideas or local knowledge appreciated!

Didnt get a straight answer on the extra tax monte. You go to customs after port police and hand back the transit log which they keep till you want to leave again. At that point the tax may happen but the customs guy i had was in training so he wasnt sure.
Your plan next year sounds pretty good. Hopefully i can get my other life in order sufficiently to do something similar. Fingers crossed. Back to real world next week...

Re: Wintering in Greece
Barra,
When I hauled out in Messolonghi the customs official kept my transit log and said I would have to pay taxes when I clear out for good from Greece. He is supposed to contact Corfu and advise them of where the transit log and boat are. He explained that is is better to not pay the tax now as they are going to change the program this winter and will most likely not charge for the period of time the boat is hauled out.

Yes Frank from memory rhodes was around 3400 euro for my 12.7m boat for 7 months. They were pretty limited availability though so might want to firm things up soon.

Thanks. It'd be the boating theft of the century for someone to slip it in the water and sail off
As long as my solar panels keep the batteries charged this winter I'll be happy. That red Sahara dust will probably coat them pretty well by next spring.

Re: Wintering in Greece
Has anyone priced Olympic Marine in Lavrion lately? I'm considering a haul out in the Aegean next year to save some time. They have the capacity to haul an 8 meter wide boat.
