Where are the Female Sailors?

We have been in Greece for over 2 months now and my wife is wondering where the female sailors are?

Over 90 percent of the charter boats are filled with guys. We have sailed in the Dodecanese, Eastern Sporades and Cyclades with the same ratio of 90% guys to women are on the sailboats. Is this normal for here?

The cruising sailboats are so few and far between that we can't estimate the women sailors on them.

Sure in Turkey we expected a mostly male groups of sailors because it is a male dominated society. But in Greece what happened to the women?

Just curious.

Re: Where are the Female Sailors?

I guess you wont see many Greek single women sailing. Its a cultural thing. As for other single solo sailing women, maybe its just not safe or acceptable.
Single women have a much harder time than many men would believe or understand so its hardly surprising they are less abundant.
Maybe the majority of women would prefer company to sail with, wheras men are content to be crusty old hermits and go it alone

There are thousands of answers to this question

My girl friend doesn't like sail boats. They are "too close to the water." Prefers to be in the pilothouse or saloon, or sitting outside on cabin top when water is smooth and weather nice.

SVAspen,

If you are a single solo sailor pm zeehag to join SSSSM FB group. There I can assure you the solo lady sailors outnumber the guys about 2 to 1.

Talking Re: Where are the Female Sailors?

Well two of us are here. http://www.cruisersforum.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Here meaning - boat laid up in Malta while (boo hoo) I get over an injury; us physically as I type in UK but tomorrow heading to La Spezia to join two other women sailors for a few days in the Tyrrenhian; us will be next year in the Adriatic after four lovely seasons in the western Med; us last week sailed in the Aegean Sporades, admittedly (whisper it) on a day charter someone else arranged.

There really aren't that many women single handers in the cruising fleet. If you are looking for boats crewed only by women, we're hen's teeth. There are lots of women cruising with their male partners, but you have to talk to the blokes too.http://www.cruisersforum.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Can't speak for charter boats as we (usually) avoid them like the plague!

Either way - guys - the question is not an excuse for a load of pictures ridiculing or objectifying women!

Re: Where are the Female Sailors?

I was working on the Saronic flotillas last year and our company had 6 women out of a staff of 12. This included 2 out of the 3 skippers. We were a bit of an anomaly but enjoyed a good reputation in the ports. I've still not met a female engineer, though!

It's worse than that

After 4 charters in Greece - several 10 yrs ago and one this May.
The trend continues - It appears that "certain" european, eastern european and into Russia men use Greek charters as many men in the USA use golf. A get away week(s) just for the guys. The charter companies certainly chase this segment as they get big boats to fit the 6-8-10 men. One charter company mgr told me that men from one country do not even bargain - they want the biggest and best........and I saw some examples of it.

It was refreshing to see a few boats with equal numbers of YOUNG men and women.

Worse - the only silver lining to the cooler & unsettled weather this May was that no speedos were on display - nothing like 10 not so in shape men late in the happy hour with those outfits - :roll eyes:
Then add cockpit singing at XX hr after midnight returning from a late dinner & hours in the bar when you are jammed into a MedMoor quay - wonderful

Re: Where are the Female Sailors?

Chuteman - you are absolutely CORRECT!!!

What is with the all-men charters????? It seemed very odd to us but now that you say this, it is like a golf outing for them, we understand.

The male groups we have seen are usually from Germany and eastern block countries. If only they could sail we would feel better about them. Mykonos is one of their preferred stops and every night in the marina was really tense because they cannot moor properly. Boats were damaged constantly with no regard for the other boats moored by these groups of men. Strange!

Nothing wrong with posting tasteful pictures of people that we find attractive.

Agreed ... we love sporting them on the bows of our decks ... seen nothing distasteful here for sure!
