North Korea is basically doing the same thing with the dismissal of all top military officials this past week. That usually means a fast, terminal exit.

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

Reuters posted this story earlier today...

Quote:
Erdogan targets more than 50,000 in purge after failed Turkish coup

Turkey vowed to root out allies of the U.S.-based cleric it blames for an abortive coup last week, widening a purge of the army, police and judiciary on Tuesday to universities and schools, the intelligence agency and religious authorities.

Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the coup attempt, stirring tensions across the country of 80 million which borders Syria's chaos and is a Western ally against Islamic State...

"We will dig them up by their roots," he told parliament.

Sounds like they'll have a low overhead for awhile.

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

A good article explaining the three major factions in Turkish society can be found at:

What's Behind Turkey's Coup & Purge?

What is going on now appears to be the real coup. It is the power grab of one faction against the other. There was a manufactured pretext to launch this coup and smoke and mirrors to blame military.

When the Turkish public within this third faction wakes up to the fact there is a giant power grab being taken against them things likely will get difficult.

Appears emails were just released on Wikileaks. WikiLeaks has published 294,546 emails along with thousands of attached files from 762 mail boxes that allegedly belong to the primary email domain of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

In Malaysia, writing is pretty clear on the wall that the US will be set up and blamed. If you are in Turkey and look like a US citizen, you may not be as safe as you think.

This is a paragraph from the Malaysian news story. It is not the sort of paragraph that says leave the local yachties alone.

" "It is known that many coups around the world were supported by the U.S. The latest example of this was witnessed in Egypt. But the most striking one was the ousting of socialist President Salvador Allende in 1973 in Chile, who was democratically elected. Although years have passed, the method remains the same."

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

"Democratically elected government" sounds great, until you realize that without Bill of Rights it just means total oppression of minorities by the majority. "We Won"
Like being a Copt in Egypt after the Arab Spring.

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

The New York Times published a well researched article that confirms the purge is largely against people or groups that spoke out over the years against Edrogen's faction or treatment of Kurds.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/23/wo...he-making.html

The situation very much reminds me of issues in Malaysia. There, a very much more progressive class of mostly Chinese descendants control much of the businesses, have their own schools, and speak out against the Muslims that control the government. Perks for Muslims include more educational scholarships government housing etc. In Malaysia it is clear who is of Chinese versus Muslim ancestry and the Muslims keep their power base easily.

In this case the "Gulenists", who are also Muslim, are harder to differentiate from those controlling government.

As I read about Gulenists, I am very much reminded of the Freemasons. Members of this group have been seen as controlling society and attacked in Nazi Germany where an estimated 80,000 - 200,000 were sent off to concentration camps.

So what is the big deal with Gulenists? They are the intellectual and business class. They are guilty of promoting two dangerous concepts:

An open non-corrupt government ruled by law, and;
a multi-party democratic system.

Which are the pillars of Mustafa Kemel's (Ataturk) constitution of 1923(???). He was (for those that don't know) the General in the First World War that stopped the allied advance across the Dardinells.
It was, indeed, a brilliant plan by Winston Churchill that should have been successful, and had it had been would have cut the war in half saving millions of lives on both sides.
Kemel was, unfortunately for us, a brilliant General and we had to withdraw after some months of fighting.

Kemel rose to the top and in post WW1 Turkey became Ataturk, the Father of modern Turkey.

It's a shame his constitution lies in ruins and his statues are being ripped down.

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

Marc,
I think your conclusions are rough and are not reflecting the raelities. They look like to me more of your phantasy based on your readings but not the facts.
I want to assume that you do not try to fear the sailors in those waters but with your wrong assumptions you are allready doing that.

No. I am just giving reasonable warnings.

If your country is safe its for your country to prove it.

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

You are giving fals alarms based on very poor knowledge and information. According your profile, you are not even in this waters, so your warnings are just based on newspaper or media information you are fallowing.
