Re: Turkey - Military Coup

Why do you say its the end of Ataturkism? Ataturk was the one that united the Turks and formed government at a time when bits and pieces of Turkey were controlled by numerous external forces after WW1. He's still on everyone's walls. He's still their hero. you cant undo history and what he achieved for the Turkish people. His legacy is what will give the Turks hope and strength to get through this.....(i think)

Of course they do.
That's been the concern for Turkish people since that corrupt government got in because their neighbors are not buddies with the USA, being seen as buddies of the USA makes them the enemy of their neighbors. It was always a scary situation for the civilians who hold nothing against civilians in Syria, Iraq, Iran or the USA or anywhere and just want peace.

Some good writing:

Erdogan will use the coup as an excuse to accelerate the Islamization of his country and to lead Turkey deeper into the darkness engulfing the Muslim world. His vision is one of a neo-Ottoman megalomaniac.

Not that I'm a fan of Fox news but that was quite accurate, but they (the coup) didn't have the support of the people as they did in Egypt..

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

We are in Turkey. Sailing around Kas, Finike, Kemer.
The area is quiet and the coup passed over us without noticeable effects (some cars honking on the streets after Erdogan regained power).
The general sentiment is that the government has full power, but people are expecting an extensive purge of the opposition to Erdogan.

On the other hand, very few tourists and very few foreign and charter yachts (which allows easy anchoring in the usually crowded bays).
Restaurants half empty, stores deserted etc. but this is the outcome of Turkey relationships with Russia, Germany & Israel that were the main sources of tourism. The unsuccessful coup will not help in this matter...

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

Well that really is the point isn't? Sure doesn't seem to have been any coup at all. Further claims a cleric in the US has orchestrated all of this are far fetched, and flat out delusional. The papers pointed out that lists of people to arrest and officials to sack appeared far too quickly.

In other words this has all been staged with a very real purpose in mind.

Perhaps buried in 300 thousand internal emails from Erdoğan's AKP that Wikileaks claims to release soon there may be some clues as to what really is going on.
