Re: Turkey - Military Coup

Perhaps this will be a wake up call to Erdogan that the Turks don't want to give strengthened presidential powers, especially for someone with strong islamist views.

BTW, we usually transfer through Istanbul on our way to/from the States. Yesterday I happened to take a non-stop though. Can't imagine how bad the delays would have been trying to get back here. BTW, we passed over the Istanbul area around midnight-ish. The plane did not divert at all from its normal path, so I guess the news didn't reach the airline's offices yet to avoid this hotspot.

To all those currently sailing in Turkey, use common sense. Even if you are in a quiet town the emotions and anti-American sentiment can find you in a world of hurt. Don't go near any protests with your camera or curiosity.

A perfect time to discover Turkey. Most of the tourists will be gone and all the atractions are privately yours. I was in Egypt a week after the military coup, best time ever, no westerners around, some from Argentina, India and Vietnam. Think about seeing Giza pyramids without the crowd

Weird post coup stuff.
This morning Turkey has sacked 2,745 judges.

The Purge starts.

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

After the "clean up" I don't think Turkey will be in danger of joining the EU for a long time.

We're flying to Istanbul on Monday to collect our boat from Marmaris the next day! Bad timing. Airport is looking to reopen though I think?

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

We're just out of Turkey. No panic! This was to be expected since a long time. And while it's not resolved for the future, it seems under control as the Turkish government forces have regained control of the situation. Lets not forget that Turkey rebuilt under Ataturk military control!
We keep monitoring the situation with care....and moderation!!!

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

I think there's serious stuff going down and I think the 30nms to Greek waters is safe.

This morning Turkey banned the USA from flying missions against ISIS from Incirlik Air Base and has now cut power, closed airspace at Incirlik Air Base and is refusing to let 1,500 US air force people out by land or air.

If, and this is an if... if people start believing the Government spread rumors that the US was involved in refuling coup aircraft at Incirlik last night then all foreigners could be targeted.
Erdogan has just threatened war against Any country supporting exiled cleric Gülen. The the Philadelphia, US, based cleric.
And for those that dont know much about Incirlik... It holds 50 M61 nuclear weapons...

I really think a nice weeks cruise in the Greek Islands till this gets sorted out would be good.

Re: Turkey - Military Coup

Mark,

Pls stop yr senseless theories and suggestions from 20.000 nm away basing on yr couple of years of turkish experience, I don't know how many years ago. Terrorising the cruisers doen't make any good to any of us, but to terrorists.
I know this is not the most appropriate place to discuss about politics but I have to give some facts:
1-the last events have nothing to do with terrorosm like the one in Nice.
2-Neither in Nice or in Turkey there were not a single crusiers who were affected, unless some cruisers in Nice were gathering in land to watch the "14 Juillet" activities.
3-the authors of this attempt of "coup d'état" were extra righest like Mr Erdogan protected for years by himself and thanks to him had obtained a power in justice, buraucracy and finally in the army. When Mr Erdogan has realised that they were having more power than himself and his party, he started to cut them off. The answer of this group headed by Mr Fetullah under the shelter of CIA in Pennysilvania was to disclose all the dirthy affairs , private telephone conversations, money traffic, etc..that Mr Erdogan, his ministers and even his family was involved. Mr Erdogan was planning to send to retirement many generals in retirement shortly.
4-It's a shame for a country lilke Turkey to be in this kind of situation, but unfortunately that's the truth and Mr Erdogan has still the support of 50% of turkish voters.
5-Again, all this has nothing to do with cruising and cruisiers of any nationalities. There hasn't been any terrorist attack of any of the cruising area of Turkey.
6-Regarding the terrorism actions, unfortunaterly this is hapening everywhere and is likely to be this in the foreseable future as long as ISIL is not .
7-Said this, it's true that Turkey (6 th in the world as a touristic income) has had substabtial losses because of terrorim after the terrosit attacks in various part of the country, the conflict in Syria. Turkey is now trying to re-establish the relation with Russia (just second to Germany in terms of visitors) and Israel, but this year is lost anyway.

Regarding Greece, they too unfortunately were heavily impacted by this kind of negative publications, Dodocanese in particular and all the islands are deserted. The cruisers have had a fear to sail these areas as it was known to be under the invasion of refugees which is not the case at all this year. In short, both Turkey and Greece are free of any risk for cruisiers as the rest of the Med. Anyone who needs to be 100 % safe can stay at home, I will continue cruisinhg.

Anyone who needs more specific info on the matter can PM me.

Cheers

Yes, we support an Islamic state that has helped ISIS over a secular military that wants to re-establish a secular(non-religious) state government. Go figure. Just like we were pushing the Egyptian Islamists to overthrow the secular government of Egypt several years ago. US is pushing an Islamic agenda throughout the Mediterranean region.
