Hi Folks, a quick question to any of you in the Greece/Turkey area...
In the light of the economic crisis out there are there any 'problems' for cruisers that have cropped up lately.
Its been a while since I've been that way and even then I found variances from island to island in reception and charges...
I'll just be passing through with maybe one stop at Milos before heading on to Istanbul.. any info much appreciated. I've checked Noonsite and they talk of new tariffs etc...

Hi Phil,
We've not sailed the region since 2007 but retained contact with pals in the region. Always lots of talk about 'what if' but practically things seem to just keep on going as they were. I would suggest it is always best to get a cruising perimit and then stick by the rules and log in each port on arrival (as one usually forgot to do years back). I personally but doubt Greek port costs have risen by much - we rarely ever paid more than 5 euros for a 14 metre yacht - if that.
Enjoy Istanbul - we only got as far as Ayvalik and got a taxi / ferry / bus to compete the trip in 2007 - but it was a super city and well worth the trouble.
Cheers
JOHN
Thanks Swagman... its a delivery trip so just passing through their waters but wondered if they'd hassle me into 'clearing' if stopped at sea... will only stop if I have to and Milos is sorta on the corner

There are horrendous new taxes in Greece on boats which stay over 40 days or more. Be careful. There is ongoing confusion (it's Greece, after all) about whether these taxes in fact apply to foreign yachtsmen, but you would not want to take any risks (the taxes would be about $5,000 on our boat) until the situation is completely clear.
Noonsite is the place for this kind of information.
Thanks all.. the boats a 9metre Catalac so tax no sweat.. checking noonsite regularly and they're saying everythings very fluid right now.. people getting hit in some places.. others its like nothings changed..
Just don't want some pissed off greek taking out his frustrations on me as I putter past...lol.
Forewarned is forearmed...
