Travelling affordably through med?

Is there a good route people would recommend for those seeking to travel affordably through the med (in other words, places with nice anchorages, convenient places to go ashore, etc.).

I know this is broad, and may be covered in another thread.....

Cheers!

Yes, there is a route and it's pretty much a bee-line to Greece. Crazy cheap and filled with very friendly people. Next to it you have Turkey. Not as cheap but good food and friendly people there also. If you want to travel with the jet set though, prepare to pay in fistfulls of money, especially with a catamaran.

Yes.. it can be done reasonably inexpensively.. depending on your desired destinations.. lots of anchorages around the islands and some inexpensive marinas and free quays and jetties out of High Season.. if one does not take the piss.. move on after a couple of days or three..

Avoiding marinas in Ibiza and St-Tropez helps.

NEVER use any docking/mooring facilities (e.g. mooring buoys) without making bang sure up first how much they charge. NEVER.

Showers on Spanish beaches are free. Anchorages throughout Spain are mostly free.

Spain has a long open coastline, some ok anchorages but not that many. Of course if the weather is mild you can anchor anywhere along the coast. Personally if I was doing the Med on a budget I'd leave the boat at home and land travel.

A second vote on Greece and Turkey - we are in Turkey now and last summer sailed through Greece. But do not overlook Croatia and if you start in Corfu sail over to Albania - wow what a country - a bit rough for small boats but doable and not a lot of small boats
we simply loved Albania

Re: travelling affordably through med?

if you really after cheap, leave boat at home and use ferries.

They go to any island and is cool and get to know people.

You can also sleep on them for free if overnight trip.

I did it last med trip mainly in greece. No worries with anything.

hate to think how much will cost you in money and time and nerves to fix water leak in saildrive anywher in med in medium to high season.

You can check out Albania at http://www.cruiserswiki.org/wiki/Albania, up to date as of 2014, when we passed through.

As for the Albanian women, I was travelling with my wife so naturally I didn't even glance at them ...

You may well have not glanced at the Albanian women but i am sure they glanced at your wife.Still cannot get used to women with mustaches, always carry a razor or two ideal to barter and make a friend for the night.

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

You might consider a stopover in Malta. There are many marinas (expensive in Grand Harbour Valletta but reasonable elsewhere and very much so on Gozo). The Royal Malta Yacht Club has visitors berths in summer and hosts many regattas throughout the year, including the Rolex Middle Sea Race in early October.

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

We freightered in from Phuket, Thailand (Asia), spent a season off the Turkish coast, and wintered in Marmaris. Then spent a season in the Aegean, then the Corinth Canal and the Ionian (Greece) and wintered again in Preveza (nw corner of Greece). Then did the entire Adriatic, north up through Croatia, then going across to Venice for a week....then back down Croatia, and then Italy." Absolutely can not recommend Turkey or Greece enough!!!! spectactular, friendly, and not expensive. Croatia and Montenegro were the "crown jewels and not to be missed! and then go back home....enough said!

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

After 10 years in the Med, my favorites are (1) Croatia, (2) Turkey, (3) France, (4) Italy, (5) Greece. Other stops included Spain, Balearics, Malta, Tunisia, Portugal and Gibraltar. In most harbors, moorings were comparatively inexpensive (from zero to max of $1.50 per foot). Most average about 50 cents per foot; anchorage, of course, is free in most places ... But we chose moorings when available. Provisioning was outstanding, with selection and prices (especially for local products) quite inexpensive. We tend to judge European travel costs based on prices in Paris, Rome, Athens, etc. Not so in the "cruising spots". Yes, there are some expensive spots (Portofino, French Riviera and Cista del Sole, come to mind. ) . But stick to less-crowded ports and you'll have a ball. I notice you are based in Annapolis; so am I. Send a PM and I can expand over coffee.
