Tornado ripped through Marmaris Yacht Marina

Yesterday, Wednesday Nov 21st, a tornado ripped though Yacht Marina in Marmaris.

We stayed last winter in Netsel - they are safe. BUT we knew bad winds were coming from the direction of Yacht Marina when the marina went around putting extra lines on boats - the narrow area at YM really funnels the winds a bit - when we left we listed that as one reason we did not want to be in YM besides a lot of other issues.

Are they sure that's not a waterspout? A tornado would be throwing catamarans around.

We have these in Florida constantly. A tornado would throw the docks and catamarans through the air. Tornadoes throw cars around on land and level buildings.

Probably an English translation issue.

Normally not as powerful as on land but have been known to cause damage in coastal areas..

Quick check of the dates - this is what the pressure looks like when you're sitting in a boatyard and a tornado just misses thinking, Oh that's a bit breezy....

In the very Wiki article you mentioned it states:

"... In the common form, it (a waterspout) is a non-supercell*tornado*over water.[1][2][3]..."

So waterspout = in general a tornado over water.

Here is an easy way to determine the difference between a tornado and a waterspout of non tornadic origin. Notice the rotation in the clouds. Dead give away it's a tornado. The U.S. is the world leader for tornados. We even have an expanse of real estate in the central U.S. called Tornado Alley.

Some Tornado purists seem to think that all tornado's are alike in ferocity. The Fujita tornado damage scale says differently.

Not trying to be contentious but there is a huge difference between tornados and waterspouts. A tornado can be a waterspout but a waterspout can't be a tornado. The savage nature of tornados is sufficient to level entire cities. Were the waterspouts in previous posts tornados the damage would be severe even for an EF1. The windows would be sucked out of buildings and the boats in the marina would be shredded. I sailed through a rotating thunderstorm that developed into a tornado that devastated the area just north of Cobourg, Ontario, Canada a few years ago. An F1 at the highest range would cause significant damage but not likely to level cities. An F0 has winds under 73 mph and will cause light damage or none. An F5 however will destroy most of what it touches. They do not all have the same ferocity. Now I understand that the US no longer uses the Fajita scale but the new enhanced US developed super scale has an EF 0 rating that is touted as causing minor damage.

Very true DeepFrz. Although an EF0 is assigned in open areas where no damage would be possible. The EF1 is the same but occurs in areas where damage is possible. Broken windows, shingles gone and some trees uprooted. In the video I don't see the rotation in the clouds which is necessary for a tornado (Supercell). I also believe the area the videos are being filmed have enough stuff to suffer damage from even an EF1. The video does indeed show a rather nasty waterspout that light damage would most likely occur. Those of us in North America have the distinction of having most of the world's tornados. Still one of my favorite natural phenomena whether it be tornado or waterspout.
