you may want to see how the weather is and keep your itinerary flexible. I usually suggest 10 days just to explore the Aeolian Islands, so as to have time to enjoy all there is both by sea as well as on land. However, you could also do a week in the islands and then hop down to Taormina and go through the strait, although I personally would suggest just staying in the islands.
