Sardinia Squad

Ciao Amici,

Introducing the new Sardinia-Italy-Corsica Squad!

Interested in cruising Italy, or just passing through these magical cruising grounds? Please drop us a note or use this thread to meet up with others doing the same.

Mrs. Mac and I use Sardinia as our semi-permanent home base and have recently met up with many nice folks from the CF forum. If anyone is interested in in basically anything Italian, Corsican, whether it be anchorages, dining, sights to see, where to buy stuff, repairs, you name it.... just go ahead and post, then someone will chime in to help you out.

Anyone can join, simply subscribe to this thread by posting an introduction.

Saluti,

Ken

re: Sardinia Squad

I like it, I sailed from La Madelena in the 70s when my sub was alongside a tender. The rec dept had a bunch of sunfish and I made a mistake of sailing in too strong winds. Almost got blown to Corsica before managing to make S stephano. Always want to return

We will arrive in Sardinia in the beginning of July and will be spending a handful of weeks there cruising the northern & eastern Sardinia and Corsica. Among the million other tourists, oh well..
Happy to meet people from the forum!

The area never gets very crowded, there's always room in anchorages except at some of the coves in the Maddalena marine park, which can be very crowded.

Sardinia Squad

Hello Ken & all,

Presently still in Sardinia, going to Corsica east at the end of the week, then down along the Italian coast to Napels, Capri, maybe Sicily.
Sailing with Marion in this area for the next 3 months on our Hunter 38.
How do you like Ponza?

Ciao,
Robert

Re: Sardinia Squad

You will like Ponza. Plenty of room to anchor in any of four anchorages near the town. We met a nice lady at the dive/fishing/chandlery in town originally from The Bronxs, NY where her and four generations of her family have owned the Ponza shop. We spent an hour with them yesterday, and will go into town to see them again today.

Re: Sardinia Squad

Any advice regarding getting a SIM card for 3G/4G data? Is that easily doable in Olbia?

Easy and cheap. Go to any of the Vodafone stores. 10 euros buys you 300 international phone minutes per month plus 3gb of cellular data.

20 euros buys 10gb of ipad data and 30 euros buys you 20gb of data for your tablet.

TIM has a good pre-paid plan, too.... I got 20 GB of data for $19 plus 500 minutes (all incoming or Italy only outgoing) for $3, both valid for up to 3 months. Many more a-la-carte options depending on what's important to you.

Unlike Vodaphone Spain where €10 buys 1gig and 20 mins for outgoing calls..

Re: Sardinia Squad

Gary,

Unfortunately, countries tax stuff differently. I assume the basic service costs to a company are very similar from area to area, but the end cost to the user varies quite a lot due to how much the service and provider costs are taxed.

You can't even imagine what the cost for this service is in the USA. Our current Verizon US plan charges around $80 for only 6GB of shared data and requires a family extortion plan.

What are you up to today in Mallorca? I'm anchored next to CF member Polux today here in Ponza, he arrived late last night just in time for a 30 minute fireworks display in the harbor. Mrs. Mac and I will be heading over to Capri early tomorrow morning.

Polux probably thinks I'm an idiot for leaving on our navigation lights last night instead of our anchor light. Now it appears that I need reading glasses even for simple tasks.
