Montenegro Marina and Anchorage Recommendations

We will be spending a couple of weeks in Montenegro this coming July. Can anyone please recommend a couple of marinas near an airport and some anchorages in the same area, or nearby. The idea is to stay in the marina for four or five days, then a week or so in a couple of anchorages. Any cost estimates for the marina will also be helpful of a 16-17 meter boat.

Hello,

We have been in Montenegro last July. We arrived at Bar coming from Brindisi. We stayed in the marina for 2 days waiting for better weather. We followed north and stayed one night at anchor at Budva. The weather was good, otherwise we would try to get a place in the marina. The city has many tourists but the old town near the marina is very nice. We spent one night at anchor at Bigova. There are not many anchorages with good shelter as the one we found here. It was very relaxing. The owner of the restaurant welcome us and helped us to choose the place to put the anchor. The bay of Kotor was impressive. There are a few places where you can anchor but the best for us was just at the end of the golf in the city of Kotor. We spend 2 days on anchor. There is a marina with reasonable prices where we stayed to avoid the wind forecast for the 3rd day of our stay. There is a marina of Tivat where we tried to get tax free diesel before going to Croatia. We arrived there about 1pm and we were very lucky to get low price diesel since there are many formalities to be be dealt with, namely you need to have a stamp with the name and registration number of your boat to use on many papers that the customs present to you. The stamp costed about 40 euros (thanks to the marina office) and the diesel was about 1/2 the price you pay in Croatia. We left Tivat about 6pm with the tank full but, if I return there, I will certainly call the marina of Tivat (or marina of Montenegro) 2 days earlier.

Prices for our 12 meter sailing boat were about 65 euros in Bar and 45 euros in Kotor.

Hello Kenomac,

I assume you are referring to Kotor. Unfortunately I do not have a telephone number. There is a quay going NW to SE with a pontoon (for a dozen or so of yachts) in the middle. The NW side of the quay is for the big cruising ships and, near the pontoon, for big motor yachts. In the pontoon and in the SE part of the quay there were mainly sailing yachts. When we were at anchor and came to the town in our dinghy, we asked a boater how he got his place. He said something like this: "there is guy with a red shirt who is in charge; the best time to find him is around 3 o'clock" (the color and the time were my invention!). With those instructions we were able to find the person referred to, who gave us all the necessary information about the Marina. As I said we liked Kotor very much. From the berth, we just cross the road and enter the walls of the old town! Very nice indeed!

We had no dificulty to speak in English during our stay in Montenegro!

Dont fret if you cant get ahold of the marina at Kotor. You can anchor off no problems if its full or would prefer to be away from the busy road. Anchorage depths can be problem in the gulf as many of the shallower depths are prohibited areas but you will find enough to get by.

Theres a good anchorage with some restaurant buoys off the beach to the east of the gulf entrance if you arrive late in the day/at night.

We have anchored just south of Sveti Marko in the Gulf of Kotor, near Uvala Velika, quiere and well protected It is near Tivat airport, which has limited flights. You can also take a taxi to Dubrovnik airport 50 miles away.

Tivat has a world class marina, Porto Montenegro, but I don't believe it is cheap. One thing cheap there though is diesel: tax free and around €0.60 a litre; but you have to leave the country after filling up.

The town of Kotor is beautiful and you can tie-up there.

We also anchored in Risan.

For getting tax-free fuel contact Kosmas, preferably a week or so ahead of time. He is Greek and speaks good English.

This is the stuff you need for the vignette to enter Montenegro:
1.Yacht’s certificate of registry
2.Valid yacht insurance
3.Captain’s license
4.Notarized Letter of appointment from owner to Captain or Power of Attorney
5.All passports

And for the tax-free fuel you will need the boat stamp mentioned above which Kosmas can help you obtain if you do't have one for ca €40 (Cheaper if you get one ahead of time!)

We were there from 8 up to 14 of July! We may have different ways to access what is "busy"! Budva and in particular Kotor are tourist places with all the related businesses! But we did not felt the hurry to get to an anchorage earlier in the afternoon before all available places are taken!

Bigova was a favourite spot of ours too, sheltered bay to hang out in, lovely food onshore, great swimming. We spent a few days there in transit to Croatia from Bar.

It's a shame IMHO not to also hire a car and travel round Montenegro for a few days - it's a spectacularly beautiful country, as you'll see from the photos.

We visited Risan in August 2014 and could not dock in the town pier as the little harbour was set-up to play water polo! We just anchored outside for a couple of nights.

Beginning to look like we'll be spending a couple of weeks in Montenegro, and will definitely plan to hire a car for sightseeing. Will also have bikes to get around.

Also looking like plans have changed, which will head us South towards Albania and into Greece after Montenegro instead of Croatia. We checked out Croatia on noonsite, and don't feel like dealing with all the fines, fees, visa issues and corruption. Friends also informed us of the current issues first hand.

So Montenegro looks good and then more time spent in Sicily and back to home base Sardinia in October. The path of least resistance.

Hi Ken,

We spent almost exactly a month in Montenegro en route from Greece up to Croatia, where we are now based. I've sent you a PM with a Dropbox link to our log of the trip for your info. All the harbour info I put on the World Cruising Wiki, together with up to date photos.

Don't expect literary excellence from the log - it's basically a 'warts and all' daily diary. However, it will give you a good idea of the itinerary we followed and the places we enjoyed.

As you'll gather from the log, Montenegro was the highlight of that particular year for us. Let me know if you need any further info.
