Yes, some people do. French people who travel a lot with Air france do it because it is a mean to earn miles.... But, they have - of course - another card (Visa or Master) because, you are right, Amex is no more accepted in a lot of places...
15 years ago it was a "must"... It is no more the case...

Re: Money Matters in France
I had Visa card, MasterCard, with chips, without chips, from banks in Australia, Dubai, and Singapore, and I never got fuel from a self-service/automatic fuel pump in France! No real trouble paying with Visa/master elsewhere though - Unless they didn't want the credit card to work that is ;-)
I also had trouble with various ATM's around the Med, but usually found one card that worked. This was however, only because I had several card options on hand!

Interesting. Never saw that before look nice in the crosstrees
Controversially Ireland is not regarded as Celtic. ( as in this is a controversial view) The celts never reached there. They are seemingly of basque origin ( with a lot of Viking thrown in!)

Re: Money Matters in France
So fare i have had no problem with Mastercard on my way down, here, but i do use pin code. so the card need to have a chip on it.
on all places, restuarants, shops, gasfilling big and small places.... on the car and the boat.
So it all looks like its no big deal. it works.

Re: Money Matters in France
I forgot that point, you most certainly need chip and PIN. Very few places in the EU take non chip cards anymore.

Re: Money Matters in France
We have had no problems at all using either Visa or Mastercards in France. We topped up with fuel in Morlaix and paid the Capitainerie with a Mastercard - no problems there.
Louise and Jon
now resting up in Brest before onward journey south!

A bit out from Brest , you have the nice place Camaret-Sur_mer, nice place and they have a pump on the pontong, put in your mastercard and fill the tanks. no problemas.....
--Saturday i went by car from Cherbourg to Les Sables d-olonnes and back again, the sunday went from Cherbourg all the way up to Hamburg ,Germany 1220 km no problems to pay up anywhere with Mastercard,
But is must have............ CHIP and Pin Code..........
