With a data sim card in their Ipad they will connect 4 other devices to internet (in the iPad menu : share connection). It will be a local hotspot indeed ...
So the iPad will be use for connections to internet either by wifi (there are a lot in the Med : Spain, Italy, Greece , Turkey...) , either by 3G.
The phone will be for phoning.
Why to do more complicated ?

Power draw and means having the Ipad constantly turned on and onboard. Cheapo spare phone draws hardly anything.
Each to their own, I have a alfa r36 onboard which works good with turning a low wifi signal into a hotshot but for 3g a cheap spare mobile phone works just as well with little power draw.

Re: Mifi (global gig) and the Mediterranean

One of the reasons why I am on this forum is to improve my english language and actually this thread is a good opportunity !
Sorry, but i don't understand what you mean by "Cheapo spare phone" ? Is it a brand ? A new model of phone ?
And I don't understand what you mean by "Power draw and means having the Ipad constantly turned on and onboard"
As power is concerned, there is no problem with the use of an iPad onboard. You use it when you need it an you recharge it on the 12 V of the board (like on a car) or with a special solar panel, no problem as power is concerned.
But maybe I don't understand.
I had a laptop with an Alpha antenna for internet : I use no more the laptop and the antenna since I have a cellular Ipad .

Re: Mifi (global gig) and the Mediterranean

In my case nothing will work without outside antennae. My boat is entirely steel (cage of Faraday) so I have to look for other ways and most tablets are wifi only with the exception of the high end models.
