Re: Karpas Gate Marina Northern Cyprus - The Truth
Hi guys - what's the WiFi like there? I left my boat at the marina in September but the rain in Europe is getting to me so I'm planning to come back to Karpaz Gate and "work from the boat" for a week at the end of October - is it fast enough for Skype calls?

Re: Karpas Gate Marina Northern Cyprus - The Truth
Good Morning Phil,
Where you and I are moored the wifi signal is reasonable. We use Skype to call UK and Thailand regularly without any issues. Yesterday spoke to daughter in UK for some 30 mins without a drop out.

Re: Karpas Gate Marina, Northern Cyprus - The Truth
The 300t travel lift is now assembled and operational. First yacht was lifted today.
BTW, we are docked out on the breakwater wall and receive excellent WiFi signal out here. We have an external antennae and a 1mw amplifier for WiFi connection. This is the best WiFi signal we have ever received in a marina. Good enough to watch YouTube videos with no hesitancy. But some websites are blocked. Don't plan on watching movies online. WiFi reception will depend on your equipment.

Sounds like progress!!
Out of interest what's the WiFi gear you have onboard to improve your reception/transmission? I'm currently in the US so it's a good chance to pick up gadgets ...and anything that can help WiFi is a good idea!

Go to someone that uderstands WiFi
Buy a SparkLAN AD-600Z WLAN 802.11g USB Adapter or similar with a removable antenna
Buy a 802.11b/g 1000mw 12v amplifier
Buy an omnidirectional external wifi antenna
But low loss cable that connects the antenna to the amplifier and the amplifier to the usb adapter.
OR visit Island Time PC at this link: Marine WiFi Systems and buy their system

Re: Karpas Gate Marina, Northern Cyprus - The Truth
They have lifted 2 or 3 boats. The first was a 58' power yacht, which was lifted, cleaned and something repaired, then back in the water.

Re: Karpas Gate Marina, Northern Cyprus - The Truth
It was good seeing some of you in the weekend!
Does anyone there have an address (or a friend with and address) in Southern Cyprus? Beneteau have offered to ship me some replacement parts (4 new 140Ah service batteries) to anywhere in the EU so my best bet is Southern Cyprus and then next time I'm there with a rental car I can just pick them up and take them to the marina and put them on the boat...

Re: Karpas Gate Marina, Northern Cyprus - The Truth
Dale, The electrical work is complete on C and D and 85% complete on E. I know that D has been turned on for testing and has been OK by the Government. The marina is waiting on a final inspection by a 3rd party inspector. The 3rd party inspector is something required by the marina management. Can't say that I blame them for this requirement.
Philduhs, I cannot help you, but I heard that some people have things shipped to be held by the carrier for pick up. If you made arrangements for the carrier to hold for your pick up, you could rent a car and complete the circle.

Re: Karpas Gate Marina, Northern Cyprus - The Truth
Hi Phil,
Hope all is well with you. We are fine although we are forecast to have a bit of a blow on Mon/Tues. Unfortunately, I cannot reply to your PM (apparently not trusted yet).
In respect to getting your batteries shipped if you send me your e-mail address. I will put you in contact with Kate from S/Y Gantocks who live in the South Side and are willing to let you get them sent to their address. However, she does say the best way is to get them sent by DHL and get DHL to hold them at their Larnaca depot for collection by you.
As for your hatches. Well you actually have 10 hatches which are as follows:
Forehatch (up on bow) - 70cm x 70cm with vent in centre.
2 at Front of Coachroof (Port & Starboard side) - 51.5cm x 51.5cm with vent in centre.
2 in middle of Coachroof (Port & Starboard side) - 33cm x 33cm
2 towards rear of Coachroof (Port & Starboard) - 53cm x 40cm.
1 at rear of Coachroof - 51.5cm x 51.5cm with vent in centre.
2 either side of companion way - 33cm x 33cm.
Regards
Albert, Sheena & Charlie

Re: Karpas Gate Marina, Northern Cyprus - The Truth
Has anyone found a good chandlers either in Northern or Greek part of Cyprus? I plan to make up some new mooring lines next time I'm back at the marina so will need the usual rope, chain, shackles, etc. Can I assume I can find all this sort of stuff on Cyprus rather than having to bring it with me? Experiences or recommendations of best place(s) to buy these things would be great so I can pre-order before I arrive.
Phil
