Re: Italy, France, Spain med coast. Why bother?

Hey Hoppy

My 2 c having cruised mainland spain, france and the islands of the western med (but not the west coast of italy yet) is that on the islands there are plenty of anchorages, quite a few all weather options included (except sicily)

On the mainland however anything remotely resembling a natural harbour has been turned into a port by centuries of seafaring or in more modern times buoyed off for swimmers so anchorage options in foul weather are limited for quite a few stretches of coast and you are forced to plan ahead with an eye on the forecast and use marinas like it or not.

Its still absolutely worth it though as the experience by boat is far superior than a land based tourist IMHO.

But why are you asking when your about to put your boat on a ship???

PS are you still in Paroika? heading there today...

Free to achor just outside the marina off the beach. Poor holding due to rock bottom on far north western side near the rocky shore.

I prefer to anchor well away from the marina.. usually not to far from the entrance and halfway to the beach.

Maybe $10/meter ? The most expensive place in RI is Newport Shipyard at $5.50/foot/night plus electricity which can be quite high when you plug in two 100 amp cables.

Hoppy might have a point regarding Southern Spain. That is - the coast from Gibraltar to Almeria. I took a look on Google Earth and could see about 90% beach with man made harbors here and there. There did not seem to be a single sheltered bay.

Does this mean that if you want to anchor along that coast you either pay for a dock or head for a beach and hope for a calm night ? Maybe I have it wrong.

Re: Italy, France, Spain med coast. Why bother?

We have a friend who keeps his boat in the most expensive Spanish marina. But to him the cost is OK.

The way it works them they built the marina with their own money then offered the spare berthing space to transients. Being roughly half way towards Palma they can charge anything they please and are always fully booked.

But, as I said, this does not apply to the boats of the shareholders.

10 USD or even EUR per foot is not very expensive in this area. And likely far from the top prices of the most fab Med locations.

LOL

I regret that I never got a chance to see Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica & the Balerics but I'm still not convinced I missed anything along the coast.

From my hotel room in Monaco I enjoyed looking down on the Superyacht owners and guests. Can't do that from a yacht

Yup, I've heard that but I thought that was what alcohol was for? Kinda like when it's close to a bar's closing time and you're still looking around for a snuggle bunny. They all look just a little better at 2AM and after 6 or 7 cold brews! Uhh, not that I've experienced that but I've been told...

I totally agree with your description of the mainland coast. But I won't go back. After hanging for 4 years with the friendliest people in the Med I have no desire to return to the stuck up rude regions.

Palarran is in Naousa right now BTW. I'm back in the States for two weeks then returning. If you guys are around the area then let me know.
