Re: Italy, France, Spain med coast. Why bother?

For boats under 50' - New England marina prices can hit $4.50 and $5.50 / ft for Friday and Saturday nights in the prime spots and in the nicest marinas during July and August. Newport in the most prime spot in town with the mega yachts was $6/ fit at highest season.

Easy to anchor out, then go to a marina midweek for water, Pumpout, 110v AC

Thanks to everyone on this thread for sharing actual price data.

Why bother Italy, France and Spain coast?
It is hard to compare all three nation coast and even every part of their coast, so much difference in between. Anyway you should bother if you like to go inside the local life and colture of the places you sail. Cruising the med it is not just about sailing, there are far better playground for that, if you sail these coast you should like the colture, cousine, fishing tradition and notice the differences that still remain today in a globalized world. Along this coast you can find very expensive marina or very cheap one, it depends of a lot of factor, the good news is that you can know in andvance their rates and move consequentially. During fhe summer usually the wind dies at night, so youuo can just drop the anchor almost everywhere. In some places municipality let you drop the anchor in the outhe or inner harbour.
In my long experience in the med (I'm italian and I've cruised every corner of the med) I can say that with a good planning you can cruise theese coast and spend most of the night at anchor, and you can choose the cheaper marina to leave the boat and go land travel.
I hope this can help.

Excellent advice. Exactly what we're doing and experiencing.

Tread carefully my friend. The image of a nude 300 pound (140kg) middle aged woman or man hauled out next to the boardwalk, can be difficult to erase from the mental hard drive.

Kenomac,
- you overlooked that I wrote ..."sweet" t..."

SV Bacchus, I think you are a connaisseur,
- don't listen to Ken. I don't know what he is talking about.
I have never seen what he describes.

Go there, and watch yourself.

You'll get the good, the bad and the ugly.

Unfortunately, there's no minimum standard. And unlike the USA, not everyone gets a trophy for participation.

One word: Torrevieja... I'm still badly scarred, it's nothing like Formenterra.

It's safer to stick to google for looking at that sort of thing.

Last time I checked (about 10 years ago) a very comfy marina in Battery Park NYC was $6/ft plus electricity/trash fees/taxes which would probably make it about $8/ft. NY loves its taxes - they hit you with state, county and city taxes plus whatever other fees they can dream up each legislative session.

A friend who annually transits r/t New England-Florida run often anchors in NYC area and says he never had to pay unless he needed a secure spot during a storm.

In Boston of course if you can only stay at the fancy Rowe's Wharf marina or some such you will pay $8-10/ft transient rate. They do this mostly to keep what they deem "the riffraff" out and not because of the pent up demand, as just a few hundred yards away you can get a spot for $5-6/ft. But once you go to the workingman's marinas within even city limits it drops to $4-5 and with moorings typically $25-50 per mooring. And again there are plenty of spots to anchor for free if you don't mind a 10min dinghy ride or less than ambient view from your anchoring spot.

Well... I wasn't actually 'looking for that sort of thing" when I almost stumbled over it whilst walking along the Torrevieja boardwalk. In that respect, I'm guessing google would be safer.

There are heaps of great free anchorages throughout the Balearics, we did not use a marina at all through there.

We laid our anchor in the harbour out of everyones way at around 10am after a nights passage. Guardia came along about halft hour latter to tell us we coud not anchor in the harbour, had to go to a marina. I explained we just needed a sleep and would be gone by late afternoon. They said ok. Few more boats anchored over the day, we stayed overnight and all left at daybreak. So it is not a multiple day option anymore unfortunately.

That's a port/harbor. What do You expect?
Go to: Ibiza
Cala Salada, 2 nm north of Sant Antoni de Portmany, the beach in the north of that bay: Platja de Cala Salada
or:
Southern Ibiza: Enseñada de la Canal (Platja de Ses Salines) the beach at the southern part.
If you are disappointed, You get your money back.
