Em , Greece is getting loans from the ECB , ( in effect ) you're not contributing a single tax euro to it. That's just " red top" nonsense.

Note the interest on ECB money is in effect zero as all interest in European Central Bank loans is returned to the member governments.

And yes , all the rich should pay more taxes , I mean they have more money right !!!

Haha interesting ecomomists view of the world Dave you can confuse the issue however you want ECB,BBC,ETC.ETC. but saying the money comes from here goes to there and nobody really pays blah blah
that's why were in the mess, sooner or later the money comes from somewhere...
The truth is much simpler: tax rich countries (who pay there taxes) Do pay for tax poor countries(those who don't pay there taxes) to maintain there false 'european' standard of living.
Anyway no hard feelings, I'm off sailing, probably away from Greece

No hard feeling , I'm just debating you.

In a fiat currency, actually money doesnt come from somewhere , it's just " invented" that's the fact. It's value merely represents the underlying " confidence " we have in the entity , ie state behind it. The that's why for example despite all the tribulations the Euro for example is still floating around 1.25-1.30 to the dollar and why despite have a debt to GDP of 130 % , Ireland is back borrowing money at pre crash rates.

Paper currency isn't gold, you have to break that thinking , it hasn't been a proxy for good for a long time. It's a measure of " sentiment" , good sentiment = turn on the printing presses, bad sentiment , layoff some mint workers !!

Good luck with that. I just installed AIS on my boat - it should be a deterrent to Greek revenue pirates.

Paper currency is worth virtually nothing, unless backed by hard currency (gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper). US Fed Reserve sends a $16 check to Bureau of Printing to cover the cost of printing each page of paper. Coins, oth, are sold to banks at full face value. Coins are still in use from the early 1900's. Paper currency lasts about 18-24 mos.

Correct and today it's not really backed by any such hard currency, central banks retain the semblance of hard currency in a " reserve " , but its a long time since we had the gold standard lol

The country is bankrupt due to overspending which was becase Nixon got us off the gold standard. Nothing would please the ME more than having gold to back the currency and put Asia on notice.

If you're referring to Greece, it is not bankrupt.

Re: Greek Tax! - MERGED 4 THREADS

As interesting as this talk or paper money, the gold standard and bankruptcy is perhaps we could see a little restraint and keep on topic.

There are thousands of boats going to be affected by this tax and right now directly related hard facts is what people want to see and read about.

Thanks

Re: Greek Tax! - MERGED 4 THREADS

but the OT chit-chat keeps the topic alive whilst we wait for the Greeks to finally implement the tax.

If this thread goes dormant it is likely that by the time the Greeks give us something new to discuss, the thread will have to have it's title changed to Greek Tax! - MERGED 10 THREADS

But if you were a livaboard in Greece (or any where else with plans to transit greek waters) without a high speed internet connection would you really want to read thought lots and lots of OT pages to find the information you really wanted?

New Greek Cruising Tax | CA

The CA is the place to go for the best and most up to date information in my opinion. Forum threads inevitably get filled with opinions rather than facts.
