Greece votes "NO" - impact on cruisers

It was suggested that we perhaps retire Greek Tax! - MERGED 4 THREADS - Page 40 - Cruisers & Sailing Forums and have a new thread discussing the current situation in Greece and it's impact on cruisers and charterers and others.

Will Greece Grexit? Having issues with banking/ATM? Getting supplies? Ordering parts? etc....

I'm in Corfu and ordered a new Harken roller a bit more than a week ago, before the referendum was announced. In typical Greek fashion things did not happen quickly and it was not until after the referendum was announced that the actual order made it to Harken in Athens. Supposedly it was in stock there, but since late last week we've been waiting with no real idea as to what's happening with the transport company. The situation has not been helped by Harken Athens seemingly closing down late in the week, so no one has been answering.

The company in Corfu who placed the order is going to the transport depot this morning to see if it arrived.

I'm close to cancelling the order and put the mast back up without the new roller, but i found out the riggers forgot to order the plastic endcaps for the spreaders. Something more to wait for from Athens

Good luck with getting your new stuff out of Athens. Maybe it's time to sail across to Italy or up north to Croatia until there's some resolution in Greece. Here you can get shipments, excellent labor and the ATMs give what you ask for.

Corfu is on our stop list for next season, I think we still have a few drachmas left over from our last visit in 1984... but not enough to fill a wheel barrel. :-)

Accessing cash and provisions has been very easy here in Elounda, Crete. However we've had some difficulty with getting some stainless work done. Despite having a fist full of €50 notes and being willing to purchase materials in advance the SS man will not commit to doing the work, his explanation being that we should wait to see what happens this week
We've also tried to buy a sheet of mdf and have it delivered from probably the biggest building supplier in the area, he doesn't know if he'll still be here this week so, again, no commitment to deliver to us.

Maybe the rigger still has the old end caps, and you could re-install them if the shop is not working. For the short term, re-using them could give you mobility...if you wanted.

The old end-caps are still on the spreaders. My back out plan with them is to get Z-spars UK to courier them to me.

If Greece was a modern electronic economy then the banks closing should have minimal affect except for companies that import goods. B2B transactions within Greece should work as normal, salaries paid as normal and consumers should be nudged more towards making Greece a cashless society.

But this is Greece so the economy is as up to date as this hairstyle

the banks will run out of cash tomorrow,i cant see them getting given any more liquidity by the ECB until there is a deal signed, in the mean time expect chaos......

the ball is firmly in the court of the current greek gov now .....lets see how cocky they are once the food riots start,and the whole country grinds to a halt.

One bit of good news

Greece debt crisis: Finance Minister Varoufakis resigns - BBC News

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has resigned. This is a strange situation as he was a major voice in pushing the No vote. Normally people resign after they lose.

Perhaps if he resigned in the first place, instead of calling a referendum then maybe everyone might have been better off

Personally I think the Greeks were right to vote no. The austerity measures are hitting the poorest people hardest with no sign of any light at the end of the tunnel.

At least this way there is a chance of a more realistic deal being discussed.
