Greece or Croatia in May ?

Hey All

The admiral and I are scheduling a week long charter/test sail on a cat we are considering for purchase in the Med first week in May. I would love to sail Croatia but was curious if the weather might be a bit chilly that week. Any thoughts or advice would be great.

Btw the other bases we are looking at chartering from are Lavrion or Kos

Thanks in advance

Will

Chilly maybe, blowy more like. We've sailed Greece in April and it was strangely nice to sail in the sun, with snow still on the mountaintops!
IMHO get as far south as you can.

Re: Greece or Croatia in May ?

Concerning the weather you cannot predict anything anymore: I have sailed this year May/June from Peloponnes to the North Adriatic and I had ony sometimes days between with some warm weather and sunshine. The rest was chilly and rainy.

Concerning Greece or Croatia:
See this: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ume-71709.html
however for just a charter week it does not make so much difference, respectively you might not get so much bothered.
Croatia: The habour fees are high, the aministration rules are nerving and boats are considered as cash cows.

Why not Sicilly or Sardinia ?

Re: Greece or Croatia in May ?

We sailed Croatia in May 2005 and had a mixture of fine, sunny weather and occasional periods of heavy rain and high winds. A week long charter is risky at that time of year since you might hit a period of the latter rather than the former. There's no guarantee, but Kos and the Dodecanese tend to get more settled weather in early May; we've cruised that area several times in early season and rarely encountered bad conditions. From Lavrion, however, you've got a long sail to get anywhere interesting and if the weather turns while you're in the Cyclades, for example, it's a nightmare getting back. I you opt for Lavrion, I'd advise staying in the Saronic Gulf if you're only taking a week.
