Re: European Boat Ownersip

I paid 650 euros a month high season throughout the summer to keep my 28 footer in france on the med near nice, expensive, but oh so worth it.

Remember that the typical US boat is a trailerable small fishing boat that someone keeps in their driveway. It used to be, and I suspect it is still correct, that England and even New Zealand have more cruising size sailboats than we do in the USA. Boat ownership here is very broad across economic classes, but sailboat ownership is very much a white collar, upper middle class and up sport.
Yes the US statistics are very misleading, theres roughly 17 million boats in the US ( industry figures) , but a huge percentage of these are small fishing boats/bow riders/ski boats etc. The actual percentage of sailing boats ins close to 1:150, New Zealand has the highest percentage of sailing boats in the world, Norway is europes leader with 1:7 and teh UK is quite low, with sailboats at 1:300.

That makes sense. Summer prices around 800 pm seem to be common for a 40 footer. Some offer fantastic winter prices around 200 pm.

Re: European Boat Ownersip

In South Brittany, I pay 1740€/year for a 9m x 3.5m berth. And this isn't the most expensive marina in the area.

The waiting lists for berths are very long here: I had to wait for 6 years. In other marinas, it's about 15 to 20 years. No wonder that the prices keep rising when people are queueing for spending their money.

In the marinas, the size of sailing yachts is steadily increasing. Many owners are middle-aged white collar or well-off retirees and they want comfort like at home.
