Yes the Med and Adriatic can be expensive but there are few places that offer the combination of culture, weather and convenience, witness the number of boats located there from all over the world. Cost is important but is not the only factor and the OP was asking specifically regarding Croatia.

Cost is important, but I am looking at the overall cost of cruising, for a family of 4. We live about 7 hours drive from the Istria - We've done the trip and much more (until Split) many times. Even with a cheap flight the 4 of us are looking at 700EUR-ish plus hire car per trip to Greece and Turkey. If we can substitute just 2 flights per year, that's easily a thousand - and I can still fly to e.g. Split if I jump down for a quick "maintenance" weekend alone.

I also like working on the boat myself: flying with my usual toolbox is an absolute no-go, and of course having a car is a great help in provisioning. Rental = further $$$, which may be OK, but shouldn't be forgotten if we deem one country "expensive" the other "cheap".
