Caledonian Canal

Can anyone recommend a detailed source of information regarding the Caledonian Canal? Everything I can find provides only a general overview. I would like to know where each potential mooring is along the canal, trail heads that could be accessed from each mooring and transportation possibilities from each mooring to the trail heads. We plan to spend two weeks sailing from Inverness to Fort William and back with a lot of hiking and some sightseeing along the way. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks,
Hooper Williams

Re: Caledonian Canal

Hooper,

I would start here.

I have done the Caledonian Canal but it was 1992 so probably way out of date. However, great fun, gentle locks and great scenery. The bouyage may well be very confusing for you if you are used to sailing in the US, as the UK uses IALA A System.

To complicate matters it changes about half way in Loch Lochy I think, just as you could out of a lock you will be presented with a red pole. No green just the red, now its up to you to work it out. We edged our bets and crawled past the pole with plenty of water underneath.

Re: Caledonian Canal

Thanks Pete. It turns out that there is public transportation available from the canal to many trail heads. It's just a matter of getting the route maps and schedules figured out from across the Atlantic.

Thanks for the heads up on the buoyage situation. I'll try to get up to speed.
