Re: Buying decent, but cheap boat in Med

@tia yep elbow grease , early to rise and late to bed - and lots of it converts a distressed wreck into a pristine proudly owned vessel. been there and now that I am retired , have more time to snooze in the afternoons to ease the achy muscles....

re pro's and cons of boat registration , found stuff on noonsite.com : excellent content.

cheers kris (with elbow and knee pads)

Re: Buying decent, but cheap boat in Med

I am in process of buying a boat in the Med right now. I had looked at trucking my boat across the US and then sailing across the Atlantic but it became a logistics nightmare along with being very expensive. I finally decided that it was better to buy a boat in the Med for around the same cost it was going to cost to re-position the boat from US West Coast to the Med. The savings were in the following areas: 1) Didn't have to prep the boat for an Atlantic crossing, 2) didn't have to pay to have the boat trucked across the US, 3) Didn't have to find crew for the crossing, and 4) didn't have to take the time off of work to sail across the Atlantic. Because my kids are now both teenagers I realized that if I were to wait to get our West Coast boat to the Med that they would be out of HS before this happened. We had looked at getting a 40' boat and kept on shrinking till we are now going to close on a 33' boat. The plan is to spend as little money on the boat as possible and then to resell it. No adding fancy gadgets. Use the existing equipment give it some lipstick and then put it on the market after having used it as a floating condo for 4 or 5 years. We searched every online site that we could locate. Looked at boat from Greece to the UK. It seems that the further east you go the cheaper the boats are. We wanted to buy a boat in Spain b/c that is where we have relatives but ended up buying a boat in Italy. I'll let you know how it all works out but we are running into problems with de-flagging and reflagging. I am one of those do it yourself type boat work people so I had to find a boat that did not need major work or else it wouldn't have worked out well. Paying someone to do work on the boat would have made it expensive.

Re: Buying Decent, but Cheap Boat in Med

Great thread! A couple of questions to add:
On advice of other poster ... explored Apollo Duck and saw 223 boats for sale in Ionian (Greece). All price ranges. Prices appeared comprable to Cali, USA *if* one makes these assumptions:
1. Apollo Duck had broker listings - likely higher than private party prices?
2. List prices assume buyer will haggle down for better deal?
Is this correct? Or?

Another question:
Assuming best "budget" deals aren't always on internet ... would it make sense to fly into Athens and shop Pireus?
I imagine this would be similar to advising a Greek person: Fly into LAX and go shopping in Long Beach for best selection & good departure point for anywhere you want to sail. Is this true? or totally bad idea?

Thank you!

Re: Buying Decent, but Cheap Boat in Med

Hi Mr Magoo ,
Depends....
If Uk leaves Eu .... I would certainly try and register it in Malta...
Even if it’s only temporary...
Cruising the med with an Eu boat does have advantages.
...when going stateside , you will have to do whatever at the time...
So for now - choose where you ar3 spending your time and act accordingly...
Congrats on your 1st happy day 💕 🙏

Hi Derrick,
At the end did you buy the boat?
