We are finally here in Croatia to begin our 1 year adventure in the Med! We have the Croatian Adriatic Sea Pilot books but find them very technical and lacking in "cruiser" information. Are the Imray Pilots the best? Any other suggestions for the Adriatic, Greece, Turkey, Italy and hopefully we will get to France and Spain? Thanks! Marina
Hi - can't speak for east of Italy but we have found the Imray books fine for the west. Any printed book obviously dates, and the most uptodate info is either on the Cruising Association site (the best being if you are a member which also gets you discounts at lots of useful places), or on ybw.com
Alex,
The best pilot for Croatia is locally produced black and white jobbie. Called '777' after the number of inhabited islands along the coast. It is in English.
It easily beats ALL other pilot books for detail and accuracy on maritime issues but we also carried the Imray Pilot which had more landside info.
Cheers
JOHN
For France and west coast Italy we used Imray and then bought a guide called BLOC (I think) that covered a lot of the same ground but in a different way.
Using both together meant that we had no surprises when we went into marinas. Photos were very helpful and the descriptions were usually accurate.
Thanks everyone! We got the 777 and it's great! Also bought the Imray books that should cover the next several months. Off to Greece in 6 weeks or so...Happy Cruising!
