Amalfi Coast, Tramontana, Ports & Moorings
All:
Thank you for your help in advance.
A few questions. I'll be sailing a 42' monohull form Salerno to Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi, and back to Salerno in late May 2015.
I've read horror stories about the Tramontana kicking up force 5, 6 and higher squalls out of nowhere. How worried should I be about these? I'm with a relatively inexperienced crew for the duration.
Also, is there anywhere to overnight between Amalfi and Capri? The coast looks barren and harbour-free.
Finally, that time of year, how hard will it be to find berths in Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento?
Many thanks!

Praiano, Positano and Marina del Cantone all have mooring fields. Saw a lot of folk coming and going through the two weeks we were in Positano one August.
No idea for May though.

Re: Amalfi Coast, Tramontana, Ports & Moorings
We'll be doing almost the same trip in September on a 42" from Salerno. We might try to do Capri, Ponza, Ventotene, Ischa, and back to Salerno in a week. Is this too much?
Do we need to make reservations for docking/mooring?

That sounds like a lot of sailing. Its 25 nm capri to salerno and 25 from capri to ischia. The best speed we did was about 4.5 knots. The westerlies mean quite a bit of tacking as you head that way. You'll be spending most of your time on the water and not see a lot of land, especially as the boat isnt ready till 5 pm the first day and has to be back at 4 pm the day before the final checkout day. That gives you only 5 nights out.
In the end we did salerno (pickup), 2 nights amalfi, 2 nights sorrento, 1 night capri, final night back at salerno harbour. Those 20+ nm days took a good 7 hours on the water.
Depending on the time of year (ie if high season) I'd definitely make a reservation for a berth. The mooring fields are completely unprotected and most are owned by a restaurant. The fees for a berth ranged from 70 EUR (amalfi) to 180 (capri).

Does anyone have the marina names and contacts for Capri, Ischia, Procida, and Amalfi?

Definitely Aniello is your man in Amalfi. He'll even give you lemons and a bottle of wine when you leave. When you approach, boats will come out to lure you into their berths. Just shout, "AHN-YELLO!" and they'll bugger off.
Capri is Giuseppe de Simone (prenotazioni@portoturisticodicapri.com) and it is €180 / night for even a mid-sized boat.
Sorrento if Francesco (+39 347 9186864 / coport@libero.it ) we just booked online and they were great. €80/night just at the foot of the hotel excelsior. Pretty classy!
ENJOY!
